I know this anime is generally well received but haven't seen anyone mention this before, at least here on these MAL forums. The reason I decided to watch this anime is due to the all-star voice cast. And the more I watch, the more I'm convinced that instead of the voice actors being chosen according to the characters, it feels as if the author wrote the characters itself based on real life personalities of the voice actors. This is just my speculation based on watching several Seiyuu talk shows and clips few years ago while I was trying to learn Japanese.

Here are some traits I noticed that are common to both the voice actor and the character. Kamiya-san is extremely hard working and always looks tired from overwork like Uramichi oniisan. Nakamura-san and Sugita-san being BFF while also being Kamiya-san’s kouhai who admire his talent and is also really good friends with him. Nakamura-san loving cats like Kumatani and is also open about expressing his displeasure about certain aspects of the industry even criticizing directors during live talk shows. Sugita-san like Usahara being as entertaining as always and talking about wanting to be popular with the girls while Nakamura-san makes them retorts. Also, both of them were former roommates for some time in the past like Usahara and Kumatani. They also love playing games and are currently still unmarried iirc. Nekota (voiced by OnoD) asking the both of them to get married and Nakamura-san retorting with ‘I don’t want you of all people to tell us that’ also seems like a conversation that actually happened…

Also, there is the tall, handsome, popular with the girls (iketeru) and extremely talented Miyano-san who like Iketeru also has some weird aspects to his personality in contrast to his talented self who can literally do anything (sing, act, voice act, play instruments, single-handedly carry shows and so on). And the most convincing character-actor pair is Utano oneesan and Mizuki Nana-san. Like Utano oneesan, Mizuki-san also has a history of being an Enka singer which helped her in her music career as she became and is still known as one of the legendary singers in the industry. She is literally worshipped by many and is seen as the ultimate goal by many aspiring idols and singers. Also, like Utano oneesan, she couldn’t get married in her thirties even though she had a boyfriend. I have also seen few clips of other seiyuu’s like Nakamura-san casually teasing her about not being able to get married and her getting pretty upset about that. Though she finally got married last year and currently has a child iirc.

The post is starting to get long so I’ll stop. There are even more references to the voice actors’ life scattered throughout the show. Even without getting these references, I’m sure the show was plenty entertaining. But I just wanted to point out this aspect of the show which came as a pleasant surprise to me. Overall, this anime was something that I started watching out of curiosity and ended up enjoying it way more than I thought.

Wow that’s amazing. Thanks for sharing this. Didn’t think there would be many similarities between the VAs and their characters. I just happen to look at MAL after the first episode cos I realized I knew most of these voices and saw the all star cast. It’s a great show. Wish there were more similar animes.

I started watching this anime in the licensed voice acting of my country. In the process, I switched to the version with English subtitles, because I wanted to hear the songs in the original.
I do not dispute that VA's work in this show is above all praise. But here they only gave shine to an excellent primary source. The fact that VA so perfectly got into the characters' images is an indicator of their exceptional talent. But the main thing is that the author of the manga managed to give such vitality to his characters and the situations in which they find themselves.
And the most valuable thing for me is the songs on the show Maman to Together, the lyrics of which were written by Gaku-sensei. Yes, and for OP too. Many thanks to all VA for being able to convey the meanings and hints inherent in the musical numbers! Without them, it is impossible to understand much in this universe, so bizarre and so human at the same time.
