Is this connected to the original one or just take place in alternate timeline??

Ratings doesn't matter only enjoyment does.
Masterpiece or mid, generic or fresh,best or worst are all subjective
Eren is goat,and aot is still a masterpiece (eg.subjective opinion)

Yes. The start of this series takes place 5 years before the start of the current one. It has the cannon backstories for multiple characters in the original series (like Aizawa and Stain for example). Plus, it's just as good imo.
