A lot is explained in the more recent chapters of the manga, including what happened the night of the crash and the two years leading up to their reunion

Also, just to let you know, I think the main reason you should watch this show is the SoL, not the plot. If you expect plot then you'll probably be disappointed, as the anime doesn't get to it and the manga also takes a long time with it.

If you read the last chapters of the manga you understand it but to understand it completely you have to read it all
