THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
I know this might not be added for a bit, but I read it and want to discuss it.
This is very similar to Boichi covering Zoro vs. Mihawk, Vivi's Adventure is mostly just Naoshi Komi re-drawing the artwork from chapters 215 & 216. The base content here is good because it's good in the moment, but it's undeniably a little upsetting with just how one to one these adaptions tend to be.
There were a few moments where Naoshi does something a little different with the panels, for example when Luffy says they're going to pick up a friend, in One Piece proper Luffy is the only character shown, Naoshi opts instead to frame all the Straw Hats in the picture. Oda's works for how striking it is in contrast to the other panels, the simplistic background and solely image of Luffy highlights the words but Naoshi's works for how it emphasizes Vivi's role as part of the crew. I wish there was more instances like that, were different strengths felt like I wasn't just re-reading the same thing.
The best example of this is comes in Vivi's speech though. In the original, we get the visual of the crazy oceans, Going Merry, & the shining light they represented but otherwise visually Oda chose to focus on the denizens of Alabasta basically the reasons for her journey, and why she's choosing to stay. Naoshi decides to highlight the journey itself, starting with the Little Garden callback and fully blooming with the beautiful double-page spread. Love the various memories represented from Little Garden, Whiskey Peak, Drum Island, Alabasta etc, mixed with the images of Vivi giving her speech. Looking towards the light the Straw Hats showed here.
Art-work wise this was sort of a mixed bag to be honest. Naoshi artwork shined in some instances, like the page where Vivi tells Cobra & Igaram about her plan, in the best moments here he draws Vivi very well, beautiful even. And he nails the iconic scene. But the Straw Hats themselves? Luffy and Chopper in particular often veer into the uncanny valley territory for me. There's something about seeing them in this off-style that just feels off, in a way that I don't think Boichi's did.
Overall, whenever I can finally add this to my list, it'll probably give it at 6. The few highlights I mentioned are too sparse, and how off the Straw Hats look does hurt my impression of this. |
