Is this a good adaptation?

I personally find the characters, stories and themes interesting and quite typical-Isinish, but I see a lot of reviews, describing the show as "style over substance" and "poor writing, gorgeous animation", so I wonder if this is a problem of adaptation, that it failed to reach these people and advertise the source material to them?
Because, you know, adaptations are made not for the studio to show off, but to support the sales of LN.

And the question for those who haven't read the novels - do you want to read them now?
