That's precisely the reason why they would do it. If people would just download it on the internet, they really wouldn't make as much profit, especially with how demanded Gundam is in Japan and how restrictive they are with people filming at the cinema (will get you jail time). They gain more with the raw ticket money, and Gundam make billions of yens in the box offices.

All Gundam TV series release with subtitles on multiple streaming platforms when they air and all the movies and OVAs come with english subtitles even on the Japanese disc releases, so it's very rare for a Gundam anime to be fansubbed. IIrc the subs from Netflix differ from the subs from the Japanese disc release, so if you dislike one, you can try the other.
