The Main Issue with this Adaptation (Spoilers for Season 1)

Having read the manga before watching the anime up to the point where Legosi finally tells Haru about what happened in Episode 1, I felt like there was one thing that the manga had, which the anime never did - Intensity.

The most clear example of a lack of tension was when Legosi enters the dark market for the first time. In the anime, the moment where the herbivore shows him his fingers, the way Paru draws those panels completely flips the script of the whole series, changes the tone, you could even say it completely flips the genre altogether. You can feel how sureal that moment is for Legosi, just as it is for you, the reader. It's one of those immensely exciting yet shocking moments where your brain starts to think "Okay, this one is special". The anime didn't have that.

Sure, I'm not saying it was presented in a completely innocent way and didn't feel tense, it simply wasn't done to the degree that the manga managed to achieve.

When I read Beastars, I felt like I witnessed a simple SoL/Romance series turn into a dark thriller. The anime, however, felt more like it turned into an action series. Scenes like Louis and Bill that were skipped, Legosi waking up in Gohins 'prison' - they just weren't intense. They felt weird and scary in the first second, but then you somehow automatically realised that whatever was happening wasn't remotely scary, because the mood of these scenes was never set to a darker tone.

I feel similarly to you about s1 but now that I'm watching s2, it seems like s1 was just a prelude to what's going to happen now in s2. Sure, I haven't read the manga but there's a clear shift in tone at the end of the second ep of s2.

Hopefully, the 'intensity' is going to be more prevalent in the new season and considering that it's already expanding on it's theme more than s1 did, I hope s2 has more in store for us.
