Just as the title says I'm quite curious why this animation from China was allowed on MAL while shows like Avatar and Legend of Korra are -not- allowed (as well as a few manga titles made by American artists that I forget the name of atm). I was irked when I found out but I thought ok ok it's strictly Japanese anime. But here they are being biased by allowing an animation from China. I get that it's an Asian country but China and Japan are 2 completely different countries. Ask any of their citizens and they will agree. So now I'm even more irked cuz it seems like MAL just made a conscious decision not to include "American made" anime for some dumb reason? Idk why but this really bothers me :(. Maybe because I'm an American artist who draws in the anime/manga style, but it kinda feels like a jab saying "oh you aren't Japanese so your drawings will never truly be anime/manga style" 🙄. Idk thoughts anyone?

This has been the case for at least 11 years now.
We don't say Korean/Chinese animation is an anime. However, we feel they are similar enough to include them in our database. So why not allow every single show that shares similar traits to anime? The answer is simple. Because the definition could get way too broad that way

MAL will not go for "all". While we understand that some people would prefer to keep everything, the line has to be drawn somewhere. To avoid time-consuming debates on a never-ending number of shows similar to anime people feel should be added, we looked at the current state of the database and drew clean lines between what we allow and what we do not. These lines led us to include Korean/Chinese animation as an exception.

You should treat MAL as a resource for the animation created in Japan/Korea/China and released for their respective markets. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe try asking the database mods directly if you're that curious, I don't know what you were expecting by posting here, of all places.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe because it is now being dubbed in Japanese?

This might help a little: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=515957

"1. The following entries are allowed in the anime database:

Professionally produced, animated works created:
- in Japan for the Japanese market;
- in Korea/China for the Korean/Chinese market;
- as a joint production between Japan/Korea/China and another country.
Note: This does not include productions where only the animation is outsourced."
