Overall so far reading this LN, and having read so much at such a quick pace and short time, its strongest point, as I expected is the harem cast. It has only grown bigger and better, most girls are very enjoyable to see interacting with Rio, and they have their distinct quirks and personalities, so reading for the romantic bits is very amusing.
Someone with enough experience picking this series up has to expect cliches and overuse of tropes, but I like and WANT THEM in the right doses, the writer is successful in executing them, for the most part. I like the many descriptions of how badass the MC is behaving or how surprising this or that are, this LN is pure wish-fulfillment done right, the only bits that annoy me a bit more are the food descriptions (people overpraising his cooking skills get a bit tedious when it is done multiple times, every single volume), and how borderline retarded it can be that Haruto is talented in almost everything. I feel it is a bit too much, and characters commented on it before and his reply was along the lines, "I'm just a jack of all trades and master of none", EXCEPT he is a master of them all!
I do feel that is a bit too much, and this might be enough to turn people away, but IMO this LN still works because of how the writer approaches Rio, his background, and his goals, you feel he is NOT completely flawless, he can do almost everything by himself and he prefers that, but after his healing time with dear Celia-sensei (<3), starts to rely more on others, at least to be around him and share some of his burdens. What volumes 7-10 have been doing is tremendous and I appreciate the development, he has gotten and want to see where it will lead (despite already knowing major key points for that).
The MC is far from boring, he is still kinda relatable, and I really want to see him being able to rest his past one day, and grow more accepting of his worth and the appreciation those near him have. It helps that I feel the characters are rather good, again, I love the harem casting for this series.
But to add to that, how the story plays out, there are tons of characters and it feels everything that Haruto has done is meaningful in a way, and that most events, even things from the very first volume play later on again. The world-building the LN achieves, along with the political scheme makes the story also entertaining, it is not perfect, but I have read too many LNs that share similar traits (being easy and fun to read and having a good harem), but then the plot gets rather lost at some point, there is not much weight to what happened in previous volumes.
At least not at the same weight Seiren Gensouki achieves, almost always after finishing a volume for this series, I'm engaged in knowing what happens next, I have to praise how the writer constructed the lore and connected the story, laid everything out, things that at first glance are irrelevant play huge later on, this keeps me reading and always waiting to see how characters would react next.
Previously my favorites were Celia and Aisha, with some adoration for Liselotte through there (Miharu has some moments too), but after reading volumes 9-11, I have to add Satsuki and Christina to that list, and it is not like Flora or the spirit folk girls are trash either (and Latifa is a rather cute imouto), the quality of the harem is high, and I don't mind if they fawn for the MC too much, because these girls still have their very distinctive personality to them, then don't feel like mindless puppets.
It helps that the PoV changes tons and we get tons of insight into how the girls think, I have been very engrossed in reading Christina's inner thoughts, to see how much she developed and changed from her first meeting with Rio.
The length of the series plays a role here, it feels like an absolute journey thus far, with a lot more to go, and reminiscing about earlier parts of the series is a blast. Christina would not be an interesting character if she had not had such a past with Rio, and her sister, and when she is reminiscing everything (also on vol 12), I also get emotional.
Honestly what a gem of a series this is so far, "humble beginnings", but it has ambition and the writer manages to make you care for the characters, make the plot interesting and complex enough, making all volumes matter, Spirit Chronicles is the textbook example of what I want for a longer series such as this, just wonderfull~~
If I had to score everything so far, it would be about 8.8/10 = 9, and I never expected it to get this good (and I'm being a bit conservative with the score too, not letting my emotional side score it too highly).
The score of the LN here on MAL is far too low, it should at least be around low 8.00s, also almost no engagement for this forum, but I guess that is because most people discuss it right away as it comes out here: https://forums.j-novel.club/category/23/seirei-gensouki-spirit-chronicles?lang=pt-PT&page=2
I will repeat myself, but what a lovely surprise this series has been, I started reading this 13 days ago, shortly after finishing the anime, progressing this much and not feeling burnout, wanting to devour more... HIGH PRAISE. |
