Since we've got the Psychological theme going on, I thought I'd take the time to talk about Uta-Kata, a very strange show that was an important part of anime history in a way. Because while Madoka is one of my favorite shows and is groundbreaking in its own way, Uta-Kata was out here 7 years before actually deconstructing the magical girl genre the way that Madoka fans claim Madoka does.

Uta-Kata squarely fits into the early-2000's aesthetic and takes a deep look at what it means to have magical powers. While my memories are admittedly a bit hazy, I do recall being shocked by some of the directorial decisions made. All that said, I wasn't a huge fan on my first viewing. Some of those darker elements are just plain uncomfortable in a bad way, plus it moves super slowly. I'll probably rewatch for the challenge and will be happy to discuss with y'all.

I’m generally not very interested in the magical girl genre, but I’ve been pushed to watch Madoka quite frequently. Uta-Kuta sounds fascinating, especially because you sound it out to be a pre-cursor for the genre, (specifically Madoka).

Because it’s psychological, I’ll definitely check it out for the event! Thanks for posting!
Enjoy!

I'm not too sure if I've ever heard of this, but I loved Madoka Magica and quite liked Mahou Shoujo Site, so I'm up to seeing another dark Magical Girl Series! (Psychological is my favourite genre too, so this makes me really want to see it >o<)

Now that I've finished my rewatch, thought I'd drop a few revised thoughts on the show.

First off, perhaps the close Madoka parallels are less warranted than I am many of the community let on. Yes, they're both dark and both have their lead girl questioning whether or not she'll transform, but the two are very much shooting for different ideas.

Second, this show def is subversive and does deconstruct particular elements of magical girl shows (specifically Cardcaptor Sakura), but its ambitions are much higher than that (for better and for worse). Calling it a 'deconstruction' still feels like a bit of a minimizing misnomer.

Overall though, my opinions stayed mostly static this time around. Still think its an uncomfortable watch and the first half drags. But the biggest problem with the show is that it does individual elements amazingly, but once you step back, the plot and character motivations are lacking, making the show feel jumbled and clunky, despite its relative simplicity compared to a show like Madoka. There are big moments and ideas that will stick with me for a long time, but as a full product, it's a tough sell. Still, if interested, give it a shot ^^
