What made Avatar the Last Air Bender’s ending so satisfying? In the Gand scheme of things everything went exactly as planned for Aang. He learned (I don’t know if I’m the only one but I’m just gonna say he wasn’t a master of all elements by any stretch of the word.) all four elements and defeated the fire lord. We were able to empathize with his joy because we saw what he had gone on the journey with him.

Yes he was a bit b**chy at times and there was way to much quit in him. (I know I’m being to hard on the eleven year old boy.) But when push came to shove he had grit.

Back to the point. We empathized because we saw all the blood sweat and tears that made his success possible we saw a censored version of what war did to people and the world they lived in. Because we saw the journey we knew what his success meant.

Let’s look at things from a different perspective. In Vinland saga Thorfinn was an edgy jerk. He slaughtered hundreds of people he chose to grow up in the setting of Viking warfare which as you know was not something he needed to see. But we knew that he had spent his entire life trying to achieve a singular goal. He had lived for this goal and he was willing to die for this goal. We knew what he wanted and we knew that desire eclipsed all else. It was the sun around which his twisted edgy world revolved, and we watched his hopes and dreams literally die in his arms. We knew what he wanted wasn’t good for him we knew it wouldn’t bring him happiness. We also knew that he felt a complete emptiness a soul crushing despair. We could tell that his entire life lost all meaning in less than one minute. His journey had been for naught and we empathized.

Now the point of this was to show you that the journey gives the end meaning. If there was no sacrifice no pain no tears can you honestly say there was a victory. Can you say you won if you didn’t even fight?

But this was only one side of the coin.
