I hear that this movie is cannon. However, I also hear people say that watching the movie is optional. My friend is telling me to watch it.

I started Gintama 2015 recently right after watching the movie and, being 7 episodes in, that's what I can tell:

The cannon argument exists because, despite not being originated from the Manga, Sorachi participated on its development,so is hard t consider "filler" a story that had the participation of the series creator. Also, because the Anime went on a 2 year hiatus before returning in 2015, this movie was considered the anime finale for a while, since there was no prevision of a return at the time, so there's that too...

They do mention the movie very briefly moving forward, but more in a meta way rather than a plot way (like talking about the movie success and the sells numbers etc etc)... But then again I'm only 7 episodes in (I'm on episode 273 currently), so maybe they do mention the plot of the movie on later episodes or arcs, but I highly doubt it, since the plot feels very disconnected to the Gintama "main storyline".

So I wouldn't say that it's "necessary", the movie feels like any other big arc with better budget and a very epic atmosphere, but I personally would recommend it, it's pretty entertaining...

I'm currently on Gintama 2017. I skipped the movie but I'll definitely go back to watch it. I got through Gintama 2015 pretty quickly. I couldn't wait.

Definitely watch it, its a solid 10/10 and the plot is as good as or even better than any serious arc in gintama

I wouldn't say its necessary, but there's a good reason why its the third highest rated movie on this site LOL. Definitely worth the watch

I recently watched the movie. It was a great movie but it didn't add much to the overall story for me. I would've hated if that's where Gintama ended. Thank goodness it didn't because I would have felt cheated for not getting conclusions on the Mimawarigumi, Takasugi, Oboro, and Kamui. I still think Gintama 2015's Shogun Assassination and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs are the pinnacles of Gintama.
