| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- This episode has some serious shenanigans, all because the Daikuu Maryuu can move "near light speed." They traveled at this insane speed for a week before they made it to the space graveyard. Even if we assume "near light speed" just means "over half of light speed," they still covered an immense distance. The thing is, the speed of light "c" is a fucking huge number. So let's say they went 0.6c for a week. That would mean they traveled 108 BILLION kilometers. That's about 24 times the distance from the Sun to Neptune, probably deep into the Oort Cloud surrounding the Solar System. But, the Daikuu Maryuu is a fantastical piece of machinery that has already pulled off insane feats. The real kicker is that this dinky WWII plane was able to travel that same distance with a shoddy rocket strapped to its wings. I forgot if it was supposed to be 30 years or 5 years since the pilot disappeared, but I ran the numbers for both cases. If he had 30 years of travel time, he would have had to go reach at least 414,247 kilometers per hour, faster than the fastest man made spacecraft IRL at only 266,000 kilometers per hour. If it was only 5 years, that jumps up to 2.4 million kilometers per hour. Just for context, the Daikuu Maryuu at .6c would have been going 647 million kilometers per hour, versus the maximum speed of light around 1 billion kilometers per hour. Overall kinda boring episode, but it made for some fun calculations! |
