These Borgman OVAs have been really interesting. The TV show was mostly lighthearted and even if there was a lot of struggle, and of course tragedy with Memory, the heroes won in the end and there was strong sense of camaraderie and good-natured teasing amongst the cast. But now that the youma threat is gone, the characters seem to have matured quite a bit, leaving behind their students and their careers and because of that these sequels are much more melancholy and sometimes cynical, with the city being rebuilt and the heroes looking back nostalgically on the earlier, more simpler (at least emotionally) times with some sadness, and in the previous movie a lot of regret. They even have to put their suits on in the most mundane way possible, piece by piece with no transformation sequence. So unromantic. These didn't come out that much later than the TV series, so I guess these were a nice treat for the older fans, but I can only guess. Really cool feeling. Seen as a whole franchise it all works so well. Having old clips from the TV show playing during the credits was a nice touch.
This movie specifically was really good. Action scenes were well directed with a lot of detailed cuts and, at least what looks to be, some pretty sophisticated perspective shots and movement like going up stairs, down corridors and power suits floating up off the ground seen from a birds eye view. Really good watch. Miki looked great in her World Police jacket too. |
