killing off this thread, stick to your established narratives, worship your director gods and never budge. God I fucking love the anime community.

I found this on Wiki so take it with a grain of salt

"The earliest known attempt to release an OVA involved Osamu Tezuka's The Green Cat (part of the Lion Books series) in 1983, although it cannot count as the first OVA: there is no evidence that the VHS tape became available immediately and the series remained incomplete."

So it appears that maybe they were released to be sold but didnt make it to the shelves for consumers to purchase until a later date and in the case of The Green Cat, it was never finished.

"Therefore, the first official OVA release to be billed as such was 1983's Dallos, directed by Mamoru Oshii and released by Bandai."

There are many things wrong with what that article says and your conclusions, first off, The Lion's Books series is incomplete as in they did not release all of the stories they intended to. But that is irrelevant as each release is a self contained story based on one off comics by Osamu Tezuka. There would have been no continuation of The Green Cat story as none of the Lion's Books releases were related other than being works by the same author. Think of it more as a brand than an actual series. Also if you are going to use it being "unfinished" as something to disqualify it by, then Dallos doesn't count either, possibly more so as it is unfinished it's self and it actually has an overarching story. Also, I have never really seen much in dispute if The Green Cat was actually released in 83 or not.

Ok first, I was not the one who wrote the wiki article and as I said take it with a grain of salt as wiki isnt the most reliable source. That being said Dallos was complete in that nothing more was ever planned to be made. Does the story seem incomplete as a viewer? Yes. But did the creators ever intend more? No. Its loosely based off of earlier works but it was intended and finished where the creators wanted it to end. As to The Green Cat, the wiki source claimed it was incomplete. Whether it was or not is I agree irreverant. However even though it released in 1983, were the VHS's available to purchase? Thats what counts according to the article, its availability on VHS. Even if they were technically released a few months apart whichever one hit the shelves for purchase and hence viewable by the audience would get the title of first OVA.

Honestly, I dont really care one way or another and have no vested interest in the title belonging to either OVA. I was just adding in some thoughts on the original posters question about it with a source.

I just dont understand why you are upset? I just looked up the info on what makes an OVA particular when I saw the question because I was curious myself. As I said I dont care one way or another but I do care that you are obviously worked up by my response and that was not my intent. I am sure the original creators of both titles are all equally happy out there somewhere to be forefathers of the anime industry as we know it.
