I think it's been said a lot by now - they are aiming this anime for younger audience, for what reason I don't know, but the "I'm gonna be the very best" trope is something that happens a lot in shounen. Since the source is not japanese manga, they are trying to sell it to them, by making it more familiar. Just my take on this

Yeah, i see, but it's just like if in spiderman, peter wanted to be the best hero of N.Y.C whereas he don't mind about being the best, he just only want to protect people. Here, it's just like this :/

The problem imo here is, that the manga is french so for french (west) audience, while japanese studio is making this anime for japanese audience. They don't care about west cause, in the end those people aren't the ones who will make a difference in the sales. So they will choose a route that is most likely to bring in the money, which from a bussiness stand point is logical. Sure it's not ideal for the manga fans, but that is the negative of this french manga/japanese anime situation.

I think it's not the only problem here, Lerche branded this anime as an "exotic" story, it was all over their promotionnal trailers "look, it's an adaptation from a manga made in France". In the end they just made it look like any other show that has been done these past 10 years and put their own material duplicated from Naruto fillers while removing coherent part from the story that will bite their own tail later own. And I'm not even talking about all the humour that has been completely removed.
If they had not branded and promoted their product like this, source fag like me wouldn't have been that much uptight about the facts that they changed everything that made the source material that original in the first place. If they haven't put that much pride in the fact they were adapting an "original" story and just made it past everyone's attention, we would have made our farewell to our expectations way earlier.

Also the analogy made by Jugo-kun in another thread about the fact this adaptation is like Tokyo Ghoul's adaptation to the manga is completely relevant, the changes made in the anime completely destroyed the plot and character developement, so far we're only just 3 episodes in, and apparently it gets better later on, but those 3 episodes really felt like Lerche spat on my face...
