THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So Aya was out for revenge even tho her brother pretty much had it coming. But Ibuya was skilled enough to avoid her attempt without having to hurt her, like the gentleman he is. I find it kinda weird he insisted on taking her home instead of leaving her in medical care, but well.

Also kinda interesting they only mentioned the Kinman incident in passing and only showed the aftermath, the punitive expedition.

In the end Ibuya's loyalty to the shogunate didn't help him and he lost his job. I'd like it if he just refused, I mean he has the infantry behind him and everything. But that would just be too out of character for him I guess.
I probably regret this post by now.

Taking care of Aya is a way to show that he's feeling responsible for it and that he want to clear his mess himself. I guess samurai in general were extremely concientious and he's a prime example of that.

But this and his loyalty eventually still didn't matter. I wonder what he's going to do now after he has lost his position.

Aya has suffered quite a bit with the torture and losing her brother, respect for Manjirou for taking responsibility. Poor Manjirou again suffering because of the government, I hope he changes his mind on staying loyal to the shogunate because of this and follows Katsu Kaishu, Sakamoto Ryouma and the rest.
