The anime adaptation has been cancelled on June 6.

The series and its author faced criticism for allegedly racist material in the novels and in Twitter posts that MINE had made between 2012 and 2015.

honestly i'm kinda shocked on several levels that they actually canceled the anime. first off its well known around the world that almost all asians hate each other. they basically all attacked each other at some point in history and has hated each other for it ever since. racism kinda is the norm to a degree. second, i didnt expect japan to have the cancel culture that we have in the west where someone says something and all of a sudden all their projects get shut down. it seems like even the novel, and by proxy the manga, got shut down as well since it ends so abruptly. honestly what i would have expected to happen was the author being told to formally apologize and then everyone moves on. wouldnt doubt that at some level they would have had to save face and not publicly support racism but at the same time i wouldnt doubt the publishers themselves were in the backroom thinking "we agree but we cant say we agree". outright abandoning the project seems odd all things considered.  to be frank if i was the publisher i would have just told the author to apologize even if they didnt mean it so that the anime could get made and everyone gets paid. at the end of the day you cant change how people think. canceling the project isnt going to stop the author from having those opinions, it makes more sense to save face, get the author to say they're sorry for the comments, and everyone just moves on.
