She's about 183cm (6ft), with the average Japanese woman being 159cm (5ft 3in). I guess because of my American culture and my own height, this doesn't seem like a big deal whatsoever (pun intended).
I'm a 192cm (6ft 3in) man myself. I smack my head on signs and doorways occasionally. I even hit my head today. Average American man is 180cm (5ft 9in) and average American woman is 165cm (5ft 4in).
But from her interest in cute, short girls, I think it's just her enjoying cute, short girls and wanting to be one. It doesn't seem like she's been bullied or emotionally scarred by her height.

I was also in a similar position with a game avatar once. On Blade and Soul about a year and a half ago, it was probably the only game I've ever played with such a huge scaling option on your character creation. I picked the smallest fox girl possible because I wanted to be small and fast. I was interested in how it'd feel playing as an undersized character and I was curious about the hit box system. It was a boring novelty that wore off immediately for me.

It's just kind of hard for me to understand, care/be interested in her height complex, so I hope it doesn't become a huge focal point being brought up 20+ times during the series.

I'm about 150cm (Asian male) tall so it's actually pretty difficult for me to build characters in many MMOs in my height range. I did try using larger-seized character couple of times but that doesn't feel right for me. So I end up stuck with loli/shota most of the time lmao.

Even in American culture she would be considered really tall. She's taller than an average American male, and she goes to a women's university in japan. She's legit gonna be towering over all her colleagues.

I'm 175cm. I'm taller than average, sure, but the average male height here is 170cm, so I wouldn't stand out in a crowd. You'll really start to feel the height past 180cm here, and you'll feel it more when you are a girl, especially if you hang out with girls.

Japan has a very similar average male height, 171cm I believe. I'm sure the same would apply.

Also, I know it's a little strange to be using the male average height because we're talking about a female character. But trust me, a girl with a height of 170cm isn't going to feel tall when there are guys around.
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

Its not that she wants to be small because she just wants to be cute, but its because she has low self esteem with her height, its mentioned in the novel, iirc, that she out of her brothers and sisters(probably didn't covered in the 2nd episode) grown much faster than them. Also she felt jealous of her peers that have same small height, it happened in her middle school days and now on her high school days, that's why she can't socialize better and make friends. It would be great if the episode emphasized this so viewers will understand her height complex clearly.

It all comes off as piss poor reasoning to do a loli character and the whole playing it up as traumatic killed the show and character for me. I actually just actively got more mad the longer it went on to the point I just turned it off and I'm likely never going back. It's Sinon all over again with the playing up of something stupid and being overly dramatic for zero reason. It feels insulting to several types of people.

Yes, her height not special in America or many western countries (something that the novel ACTUALLY points out). She wouldn't have any problem withe her height if she's born there.

But she's an Asian, a Japanese which many western countries counsider "country of midgets". Over there, She's not only towering most girls, but also plenty of other males. Karen bounds to attracts attention everywhere she goes. Japan also known as country of noncomformity, a culture where standing out will give you a minus point. She's standing out even just being there (standing or not). This naturally also attracts less than pleasant people which lowers her already low self-esteem.

You know Avatars in GGO are Random, it would be worst if Sinnon just met a MALE kirito and started following him

It wasn't traumatic, it was stressful for her because it wasn't what she wanted. She started playing VR games for the sole reason of being able to play a small cute girl something she isn't in real life. Of course she's going to get upset each time she doesn't get what she wants through the BS RNG avatar system. There's nothing wrong with loli protagonists either, especially in a series like SAO where they're niche.

She obviously has a height complex. I can understand her issue, a girl I went to university with was 6'3" and it really messed with her for a long time. She was almost anorexic trying to keep her weight to "acceptable" girl numbers until she realized hey I'm almost a foot taller than average aiming for average weight is not happening.

You know nothing about tall girls. Even in the West the majority of 180cm+ females sees their height as a curse.

The thread starter and many other people certainly didn't share your (and my) opinion.

This isn't true whatsoever in the west. Taller women are more likely to get paid more in the workplace and treated more seriously than shorter women in the west. The issues that occur in dating is the issue of the tall person not wanting to date someone shorter than them.

Since when they need an excuse to make loli character? No seriously, since when they need to find an excuse for that?

That's beyond retarded dude.

They could have made her a loli character without using her height complex and no one would have said anything. Loli characters appeared in a lot of animes (even SAO has Silica) so this isn't an issue that they need to have and excuse in order to use it.

You may not understand her height complex (i don't know why, but whatever), but it doesn't mean it needs to be an excuse for something.
I despise woke people.
