Despite the fact that she's supposed to be the bishoujo informative main character, most of the time she just kills the episode for me.

I feel like when you decide to make an anime that focuses the majority of its time providing information on something, that the characters presenting it should at least be interesting.

I tend to watch similar shows every now and then when they catch my eye: Dagashi Kashi, Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara, (currently airing) Takunomi, Koufuku Graffiti etc.
All of those shows in general share a theme of being informative about a certain thing - candy, liquor, beer, cooking respectively. On top of that though, these shows have two important things they fall back on which make the show work: 1. Other genres (comedy, romance, SoL) 2. Likable cast of characters.

Using Dagashi Kashi as an example, its a show that primarily teaches its viewers about a plethora of different dagashi, how they were invented, how they became popular, and so on. But it does this by giving as a cast of crazy characters who do wacky shit and provide lots of comedy. Osake informed viewers about liquors and mixed drink recipes, but it used the drunk wife as a catalyst and also threw in a bit of romance. Once again all of the characters were fun to watch.

But...then we have Koizumi-san. It's not that the show is terrible. I enjoy the ramen information dumps since it's something I have practically zero knowledge of. The supporting characters arent too bad. Misa and Jun are usually refreshing when they're on screen, but they arent the focal point of most episodes. (Yuu is pretty fucking annoying half the time too). But Koizumi herself, who's in every single episode, just presents herself as such a boring and unlikable person.

She treats Yuu like shit. And she's not even tsundere; she genuinely doesnt give a shit and doesnt care about having friends. A supporting character needs to be present with her to explain anything. If there's a scene where she's eating alone she doesnt narrate or explain anything and it just plays that main piano theme song. She doesnt show any emotion outside of eating Ramen, and even that is limited to that little *sigh* of fullness when she's done eating. Koizumi also generally doesnt even explain why she likes them either, that usually takes a supporting character as well. They tag along and order the same thing, and they narrate what it tastes like and why they like it and how the toppings go with it and so on.

It's a bit ironic that Ayana Taketatsu voices both her and Hotaru from Dagashi Kashi, because they're both polar opposites. Both are passionate about the foods they love, but one is hyper and out-going, and actually wants the people around her to experience the same things and enjoy them; and always passionately explains why each things is so wonderful...the other? She'd rather sit there in silence and eat, and probably wouldnt give a shit if every other ramen eater on the planet died so the lines would be shorter.

Just felt the need to rant about it a bit since when you're trying to make a show about food or drinks or whatever appealing, you should probably have your main fucking characters who are promoting that item at the very minimum be a character people want to watch.

I genuinely don't know how to respond to this but I'll try.

Koizumi isn't unlikable she's just a let down of a character or rather she's a nothing character unless it involves ramen. I admit that having your character that's presenting the product you're trying to promote be rather plain or uninteresting is a bad idea but a part of me likes that she's a bit of a bitch. keep in mind other foodgasm anime's have entertaining or humorous characters so having the exact opposite of a character is a nice change of pace the problem is the execution.

making the comparison to dagashi kashi isn't really a proper comparison though yes both anime's are about food that's bad for you but a proper comparison would be saiki kun. both anime's are about characters that prefer to be alone only difference is saiki is a psychic who never speaks want's to be alone but somehow always get's into hilarious situations even though he's near god level while koizumi san is presented as the popular girl that can do anything but is always trying to make it obvious that she just wants enjoy ramen and nothing else. dagashi on the other hand was trying to show off it's candy of the week while not only giving us so much info about said candy but trying to come up with a situation that shows off said candy, you can't really do that with ramen for the most part.

If anything the real problem with this anime is yuu she is the worst character in the anime I've ranted and explained why I hate her so much in previous episode discussions so I'll keep it short. Yuu is one of those characters that just get's worse with each episode her love for koizumi san is the messed up part because as the anime progresses her love turns into obsession followed by yandere levels of obsession. the only time yuu was actually tolerable was when she went to the amusement park with her friends yeah she still mentions that she see's or thinks she see's koizumi san but it's not that bad. thinking about it now the only time either yuu or koizumi san are tolerable is when neither of them are together. although there was one episode that felt perfect like this is what the show should have been and that was the first 7 to 9 minutes of episode 5.

I'm going to stop here for now because koizumi san hasn't ended yet and I want to hold off on my final thoughts until the anime ends one thing I will say is I hope to god this doesn't get a second season unless they turn it into a 5 to 12 minute anime.

I'm a bit confused as to why you think that Dagashi Kashi is a bad comparison and that Saiki-kun is a good one. The only thing that Koizumi and Saiki have in common is that they have a serious and monotone MC surrounded by an eccentric cast. The shows themselves have nothing in common. One is a show promoting a specific food, the other is a straight comedy.

Koizumi and Dagashi on the other hand are the same type of show. A show meant to promote/advertise, or inform on a specific food/drink/item etc. But they way they approach this with their main characters is dramatically different, which is one of the main points I was getting at.

I do agree about Yuu though. I find her annoying as hell. Only reason I dislike Koizumi more is because Koizumi is THE main character and is in every scene. Yuu is in a good portion of the show, but certainly not every scene. We were even blessed with an episode before that didnt have a single moment with Yuu in it. However no matter what we're ALWAYS stuck with Koizumi.

1. that's exactly what I meant the shows aren't similar but the characters are. plus both shows are currently airing so it was easier to compare them than to other shows.

2. I already mentioned that for both dagashi and koizumi yes they are promoting food that's bad for you but you can only do so much with ramen with candy you can go into all kinds of wacky situations you can't really do that with ramen without it coming off as weird. for example koufuku graffiti that promotes all kinds of food but it goes down right sexual if not weird but it works because everyone around them see's them thinks the food might taste fantastic but turns out the food is just average.

3. you are correct we have had episodes where yuu is nowhere to be seen (best episodes btw) and the main focus is koizumi san and yes she is the focus but she's been presented to us as someone dignified who never hangs out with anyone, never excepts anyone's invitations, just someone who will go to any length to enjoy ramen.

4. if anything I think koizumi san is mostly there to convert people into the ways of ramen no seriously look at every episode koizumi san is minding her own business someone sees her, looks at her ramen, is surprised that someone like her would even partake in ramen, sees her foodgasm, wants the same ramen she had. it's a very obvious formula that I'm surprised more people haven't realized is happening.

Not really, that's her personality and she does care deep down or doesn't mind since she would reject them harshly and not go along with them at all.

Not really. She's just doing her own thing and being aloof because she gets passionate about one thing and that thing is RAMEN. Also she treats Yuu like shit because Yuu deserves it for being an obsessed psycho stalker.

Though I have to agree that this is by far not the best food-themed series, not even close.

I thought her being a bitch was the enjoyable part. I laugh every time she responds with 'okotowarishimasu' or 'iyadesu'. Frankly, if I was being stalked and pestered by someone all the time, I'd directly reject such advances than encourage their behaviour.

I thought the explanations and visuals were succinct but enticing enough for me to plan a trip to Japan just to taste all those different ramen. I'm gonna get hypertension or high cholesterol by the end of that, I bet.

If you noticed Koizumi is more friendly to other people than to Yuu.
Can you imagine if someone keep pestering you and staring you all day? She doesn't even realize she's the stalker herself even though Koizumi said multiple times she doesn't like being stalked.
If I have someone like Yuu, I 'm also going to ignore her too. Yuu is getting more and more creepy each episode.

Koizumi is not absolutely cold to her though, She paid Yuu ramen and transport on the last episode.

Honestly, Koizumi was the one character I liked in the show. Yuu was creepy and wouldn't take "no" for an answer and I honestly don't get why fans are so defensive of her.

Actually I dont think I've ever seen anyone say anything good about Yuu even once. Though I didnt really care enough about the show to browse through the episode discussion threads a whole lot.

Imho Koizumi is like your typical kami. As a god of ramen, she's passionate about ramen, she provides ramen to those who seek them, she even looks like a ramen (her hair). But she also has this aura about her: she's beautiful, she's respectful, but conversely she's highly moral and you shouldn't approach her without the appropriate deference.
