This thread is a tool to provide an understanding of what constitutes an article topic and what does not.
Note that, at the time of writing, none of these topics have been suggested or approved. If you would like to write on one of these topics, indicate your interest through the topic request method outlined in Writer Instructions.
Topic: Tainted Glory: Japan’s Unwillingness to Face the Reality of its Brutal Past
Description: Though Japanese animation has produced its fair share of anti-war pieces, there is a distinct lack of introspective works. The brutality of Imperial Japan in WWII is often glossed over and ignored. This phenomenon is not only limited to animation; movies glorifying Japan’s WWII days are numerous, and few, if any of them, address the suffering the country caused.
Topic REJECTED
The topic is focussed too heavily on politics rather than anime itself. Topics and article should avoid being political; there is a time and place for that, but not in the Featured Articles section.
Topic: How Accurately does Anime Portray Japanese High School Life?
Description: A significant portion of anime is set in, or includes scenes from, a Japanese high school. The lives the student live are often painted as fun-filled and idyllic. As many sources will attest, however, cram school and social pressure ensure that Japanese school-life is not nearly as glamorous as anime would have you believe.

Chance of making final cut: MEDIUM-HIGH
The topic is interesting. It also obviously relates to anime and has a plethora of material to draw off of. The reason its chance of making the final cut is not high, however, is that such an “easy” topic would also be very easy to write poorly.
Topic: Only Yesterday: Ghibli’s Forgotten Masterpiece
Description: For being a Ghibli film, Only Yesterday lays fairly low in the Western anime-watching sphere. This article will tell you about the film’s success in Japan, its recent U.S. release, and why you should take the time to watch it.
Topic APPROVED
Chance of making final cut: EXTREMELY HIGH
The topic is instantly eye-catching because “Ghibli” and “forgotten” are two words that most anime fans would not expect to see placed together. The topic has great potential and the resulting article would be virtually guaranteed to be at least passably thoughtful and analytical. Though it would still largely be an opinion piece, those opinions would be heavily backed by the film’s reputation and critical acclaim.
Topic: Faye Valentine is the Greatest Anime Heroine of All Time
Description: Faye Valentine is great.
Topic APPROVED
Chance of making final cut: MEDIUM-LOW
The topic and the provided description doesn’t really tell you much at all. The topic is also very obviously opinionated. However, a compelling case can be made for it, and that is the reason why it would be accepted. The character is well-known enough that a sizable number of readers will likely agree with its proposition. However, the chance of an article written on this topic making the final cut is relatively low; the writer could very easily lose focus or fail to make any good argument for their case.
Topic: The 10 Greatest Hentai of All Time
Description: Topic name really tells you everything you need to know.
Topic REJECTED
Anime is very often an “adult” medium. The Featured Articles section, however, should not be.
Topic: Glorious Oppai! Japan’s Obsession with Giant Anime Tits

Description: My memes are spicier than yours.
Topic REJECTED (Most Likely)
Many people would find the topic, and perhaps even the resulting article, very funny. However, we would like to refrain from posting “trash” content wherever possible. That is not to say all such topics will definitely be cut (thus the “most likely”). If a writer has previously produced the kind of humor-filled writing necessary for such a piece, and shows interest in the topic, it may be approved… though only barely. |
