| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Volume three has been an interesting ride. The gardening club arc has some interesting things to it, but it doesn't feel that it all came together. The big thing moving forward from this chapter is that Kurosawa has become president of a club. What struck me most about this volume is the theme of nobility running throughout it. I think the cover of volume three is easily one of the best manga covers I've ever seen. It does a great job of describing the volume itself. You see Yukina seated in a chair that amounts to a thrown while wearing a crown of roses. You see Yokawa with her back facing forward, and a single rose held there. It's an inherently devious pose and her right hand about to clasp the throne shows that she's just about to spring her act of sabotage. The theme is further reinforced throughout the story. The plants Yukina attends to thrive, while the plants Yokawa attends to die. This shows that the noble aspect of Yukina is innate and Yokawa lacks it. You also see the interplay throughout as Yukina is able to grow the club while Yokawa is able to kill the club. The problem comes from both Yukina's willful blindness of the problems in her domain, and Yokawa willfully usurping power that is not hers. The tension is only solved when both assume their natural roles as seen by Yokawa kneeling and kissing Yukina's foot. Once the world has been righted, they can both move forward as seen by the yuri goodness. The underlying theme of nobility was interesting, but also weird. This manga goes off into some crazy directions, but I was still pretty surprised by this arc. |
