THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
There were a lot of memorable short stories, on top of my head 'the girl and the leaves', 'the flower one', 'The grandpa cop' and many more. The side characters were wonderful, I enjoyed following Sakane and Shinko, the kappa raped him (good rape) he caught her (and rape her, well I guess it was consensual), they got married... and so on. Poor Yamada her second love interest fucking kill herself. Koike Kazuo has become one of my favorite manga authors.

A solid 9/10

Bit of an abrupt ending. Was kind of hoping there was going to be bit more of an overarching story.

Regardless, this was a pretty interesting manga. Felt like a very real depiction of the Edo period and how crime was treated then. Yamada is a likable if slightly boring character, mostly because he doesn't get to do much outside of chopping of heads and helping the condemned with their last wishes as much as possible. I think the first half of this manga was a bit better because Yamada was more involved. Felt like he became more of an afterthought towards the end. I did enjoy all the chapters that gave a glimpse of his psyche (the first few chapters and the festival chapter. That one hit like a damn truck).

As for Sakane and Shinko, I have to admit I thought they got a little too much attention towards the end. Shinko is actually a decent female character for the time and in this manga. Sakane's wife-beating aside, I thought he was a good addition to the manga.

The high point for me was the mass prison riot and escape. Once the head prisoner for the men was no more I felt the story took a decline.

I also found the romance chapters in this manga to be really annoying, especially the matchmaking chapter at the teahouse. The story became too much about Sakane as it went on.

I really liked the chapter where Yamada was marrying the woman who grew up to an executioner father too. That was amazing. Too bad these Yamada character arc chapters ended for Sakane's.

@TitanInsane That festival chapter was amazing. I wish we got more serious chapters about Yamada like that.

@WitchFromMercury I agree. I felt like this manga would've been much stronger if it focused on Yamada as a person instead of just how he executes people.
