????

These GITS forums are pretty dead but one thing everyone's been saying all around the Arise series is that it's a separate universe to the others. SAC I can understand, but what here contradicts the two original movies?

Seriously, what is inconsistent? I can't see anything myself. You could view them all as one timeline as far as I'm concerned... (clearly these are a prequel).

It's such a common complaint hopefully someone could please fill me in? :P

Not sure if you still need the answer but every entry is considered universes. You have the manga, you have the Mamoruverse which is the 2 movies, then you have the SAC universe, and finally Arise universe. That's just how they are set up. You can think of them as prequels and in ways they are, but they aren't connected in the same universe.

There are several of them, notably the backgrounds of the members of Public Security Section 9.

Back on this, and I still don't understand the accepted wisdom >.<
SAC is a separate universe, but

- Arise does exist in the same universe as the film series (and serves as its prequel)
It is or it isn't, but nothing really contradicts that it is.
(I think everyone's just more used to taking SAC as the main canon)

For one, Arise explicitly lays the groundwork of all the themes/concepts covered in 1995 & Innocence, giving background to the reasons behind the Major's actions in particular.

There are no backstories in GITS (1995) and Innocence
The only mentions are that
- Togusa is "new" to Section 9 (transferred from the Police)
- Batou didn't know Motoko dived in the ocean
- That's literally it

If you ignore the 2nd, Arise is entirely consistent (up for debate whether she was diving in some other body of water before).

Solid State Society - as a standalone film - also functions as a sequel to Innocence, if you want it to
- Major's been roaming the net, no fixed body; Batou's "Guardian Angel", and ultimately

So
A perfectly acceptable timeline is

- Arise 1-4
- Arise 5 (Pyrophoric Cult)
- GITS: The New Movie
- GITS (1995)
- GITS: Innocence
- GITS: SAC - Solid State Society
