Patlabor TV is a charming series from 1989 about a misfit police force and their two crime-fighting robots. The cast is absolutely delightful and episodes are episodic consisting of everything from catburgler plots to terrorist threats. If you don't fall in love with this show by the end, I don't know what's wrong with you.

Easily one of my favorites from the era, along with it's spin-off OVA, Films, and original manga.

Fun Fact: This series was storyboarded by Legendary Ghost in the Shell director, Mamoru Oshii. He also went on to direct the Patlabor Films to follow

Blue Submarine No.6 is about a naval fleet that patrols the twisted wreckage of a post-apocalyptic Earth brought on by a mad scientist through use of chemical weapons and skewing the planet's magnetic poles. The main character, Tetsu Hayami, is a hardened submariner called back into action after a recent increase in mutant attacks. His worldview is changed when he connects with pic related qt fishwaifu. The series is 4 episodes long and features some really awful CG along with some very well animated 2d animation.

A really interesting take on the ol' "Hurr pollution is bad" message in weaker shows. The conclusion is pretty open-ended, which may be a positive or a negative depending on your tastes. I highly recommend it

Fun Fact: This series aired on Toonami in 2000. The show is also an adaptation of a 1967 manga series https://myanimelist.net/manga/43515/Ao_no_6-gou

https://myanimelist.net/anime/930/Densetsu_Kyojin_Ideon

The next roadstop on our journey through mecha history is the 1981 classic space opera series, Densetsu Kyojin Ideon. This series is a fantastic ride, with a few lulls here and there. Its 39 episode count might turn you off at first, but there is a lot of ground to cover here. Space Runaway Ideon depicts a conflict between humanity and an alien race known as the Buff Clan as both attempt to escape the impending doom facing their respective homeworlds. Evangelion owes a good number of a its story beats and imagery to this already influential anime. The titular mecha is a semi-sentient lifeform that grows creepier the more you learn about its autonomy and will. As you can imagine, Hideaki Anno is a huge fan of this show, as well as a number of other Tomino works.

Fun Fact: This show was Yoshiyuki Tomino's next directorial work after the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam. Unlike some of his newer shows, this one carries the anti-war message with a good amount of punch. Not as graceful as his next work, Zeta Gundam, but definitely a worthwhile watch.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2048/Kikou_Ryohei_Mellowlink

Mellowlink is a kickass spin-off series of the Armored Trooper VOTOMS franchise. The original series is notable for its modest and grounded mecha combat(as crazy as that sounds), but Mellow is something else entirely. It's a balls-to-the-wall, high octane 80's action movie revenge plot featuring a young soldier double crossed by his commanding officers. Our hero, Mellow, takes it upon himself to run each of these big wigs down with only his motorcycle and an anti-tank rifle. All of the fights in this series are an absolute blast. It features everything from a train heist, 1 on 1 arena battle, and finally a showdown atop a Rocket launch platform just to name a few.

Mellowlink's soundtrack is also incredibly fitting with shredding rock tracks, suspenseful tunes, and campy OP + ED. It's by no means as well written or as intriguing as its parent series, but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy every second of this show.

(Not so)Fun Fact: The film masters for this show were lost in a fire, so don't expect a Blu-Ray release anytime soon. There is a LaserDisc release though lol
