The landscape looks so beautiful but the charadesign is ugly as shit. Seriously, I hope this doesn't ruin the animation.

Saw the manga at Barnes & Noble and took interest in it. Reminds me of Kino's Journey to some extent.

I don't like surprise suffering with cute characters, so I caught up on the available translated manga, which is 25 chapters, 38+ being out in Japan. I was afraid it might have shades of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, but it doesn't.

I'm going to describe the setting and tone now, which I believe is not a spoiler, but if you want to go in knowing nothing, then don't read this.

In what I've read there's been very little conflict or drama - the girls' dead world is serene, beautiful in a way, fascinating and mysterious, but not dark or dangerous, other than accidental hazards. The lost civilization was very advanced in some ways, and built a massive city full of massive buildings. The city may cover a whole continent, it's not clear. So the setting is not at all the standard familiar post-apocalypse.

As for whether the girls meet other humans, I guess that's a very minor spoiler:

Is this thing good? Any title that might serve as a good comparison?

It is good, I wouldn't quite say it's amazing yet, but it's worth watching or reading. Similar titles:

Is this similar to Kino's Journey?

I think so. But because of the nature of this world, the cases in this story are more on the level of individual psychology, not like the mostly society-level sociological cases in Kino's Journey. And this story is much less focused-in on making points or observations; much of the time, it's cute girls' slice of life adventures in a bizarre world. They occasionally muse on topics such as the meaning of life, finding purpose, and the way the world used to work (to the extent their limited knowledge allows).

I wonder if this is similar to Soranowoto?

It is a little bit, but here you of course have only two girls on their own, without the good-hearted townsfolk of Seize, no wiser senpai to guide them, nowhere to call home.

But it's surprisingly not depressing, not yet anyway. My opinion: the main strength of Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is that in what sounds like the most extremely hopeless, lonely situation, you will see friendship, charity, even joy. The stark contrast makes those moments stand out more than they might in a normal slice of life setting.

I'm sure some will complain that it's not believable, that it needs grit, pain and despair. This isn't that kind of story.

Looks something like Made in Abyss

If it hasn't turned dark after 25 chapters then it probably won't, right...? ...right...? :D
