I seriously cannot say whether I liked this on an overall scale or not. I somehow enjoyed it but there's a weird headache that keeps questioning myself on how I should rate this.

The first half or so (roughly up to the point where it was clear that Ancien was Kokone's mum) it was very nice and after that I have no idea what happend :'D (Maybe I lost the focus but it was so chaotic and a mix of so much stuff and just help)

BUT: Joy is adorable and I want him as a plushie

can anyone clarify me how or why Kokone was hanging from the 30th floor?
was her attempt of running away from Watanabe, right?

I watched this at the Hawaii International Film Festival! The film overall was enjoyable. Some questionable plot points were left unspoken/not shown. The two intertwine settings with the real world and the dream world kind of didn’t mash well. Should of left those two separate! The dream world in the first part of the movie I didn’t mind since it was telling a story. Second part though was pushing it.

Oh well! The film was still enjoyable. It’s up to you guys to give the movie a try.

Not really sure why they switched into the fantasy world to be honest, I guess she had those dreams to tell her the story of her mother but what was going on at the end? Was she just delusional or something? They never really explained that very well imo..

Though the movie was still pretty enjoyable, I thought beardman was a cool character overall. I'd give beardman an 11/10 and the movie a solid 8/10

Watching this late... This anime missed my radar when it first come out. It finally flew into my radar because of Yoko Shimomura, who is my favorite video game music composer (and she is the only reason i decided to watch the movie).

The movie itself is really enjoyable for me. At early beginning it feels like watching the anime version of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", probably more like the 47's rendition (yes, i watched a 1947 movie) than the 2013 remake.

However there are some things that i don't understand :

Well that was quite a nice movie, a bit different than what I expected but it was really interesting, especially with the two "worlds" they play quite vividly with!

Sure liked it I must say, but still a bit different than first expected!

That was quite enjoyable but the dream world wasn't well exaplined along with some action parts being farfetched. How did the car know how to come back in the real world and throw those ropes? It knew to come back in the dream world because it was given a 'will' but in the real world its last order was to go home. There was a few "how... what even... yeah right" moments but hey, it's a fantasy. I still enjoyed this from start to finish. Quite unique also.

An imaginative family film that I liked more in concept than I did any specifics, though it wasn't bad. Using fantasy to take a mundane family conflict, that to Kokone feels like its the entire world, was pretty interesting.

Watching the interview with Kamiyama, he obviously put a lot into this..three years of production is a long time, but it could have been better.

Still don't understand what the colossus meant, was it company problems or grief over Ikumi or family feud?

Anyways I'm glad Momotaro and Isshin made up, and it's all thanks to Kokone. I hope they live like this forever and it also looks like Kokone will be joining her grandpa in Tokyo, maybe she will follow in her mother's footsteps. Her (Ikumi) innovation of a self driving vehicle has been realised and was used during the Olympics, too bad for Watanabe.

I loved how they fused reality and dreams in this movie, especially when the father tackled the colossus by himself with hearts. I love family anime.

So it's an 8/10.

Well, this was great! Kinda Higashi no Eden meets Neverending Story if you know what I mean. I really liked how they always explained a lot by the fairytale, even hard truths about her mother. One really needed to observe every bit of it carefully to got how it translates to the real world. And the underlying message about the dangers of the technology and constant strive to improve it and overcome all hardships was also something else.

Also, I really liked the little animation details like when her phone display turned off after moving it to her ear. And I almost though this movie wouldn't get too emotional for me but the ending song totally got me. Simply brilliant. The only part where the pacing was bit off was the ending fairytale battle which felt bit long and I also didn't understood how she got on that ledge in the real life (was she trying to protect the tablet from Watanabe?) but otherwise I really liked it - while fantasy the story still managed to retain the large amount of believeability in the real world while still staying positive and didn't feel forced, I really appreciate that. I enjoyed it a lot.

9/10 The great movie full of symbolics about true imagination, human strive for their technological best and about the meaning of family. Recommended.

The first half was interesting, It was enjoyable but as the story progressed there was something which didn't make sense at all. I found it all confusing. I dont know how to explain, it's not like I hate it but it definitely felt incomplete.

Great movie!
Very Japanese in the sense we witness their love for new technologies. I think the way they connected the fantasy with the reality was smart and fun.

I really like the characters as well.

As for people asking about the colossus, I guess it represents the old traditional car industry or all the people in this industry who tried to stop progress and the new
technology.

The connection to the dream world was really convoluted. The fight in the climax was the worst part. I got annoyed trying to imagine what the heck was happening in real life while the bizarre battle was happening in her dreams.
This movie felt way too long. So much was happening, yet it still managed to be boring.
When the real world ending came after that dream fight, I was just exhausted. The ending felt really flimsy and unearned since the dream felt so disconnected.

In terms of how well they pulled off this linked-dream-world concept... if Paprika is often compared to Inception, then I'd say this movie is Sucker Punch. In fact, what I wrote above could easily be a random review for Sucker Punch.

The was a clear point in this film where the fantasy dream world should have been dropped around the time when we find out ancien is Kokone's mum and up to this point the film was pretty good.

After that its a bit of a mess when it doubles down on the mecha battle and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. I though it robbed the film of an emotional punch at the end when it really needed to be grounded in reality.

Some nice ideas here but it kind of falls apart in the final act. That said the message of the film is very nice and the credits scenes are very poinient. 6/10

I feel like the movie was good till we found that Ancien was her mom but the symbolization after that has been very weird. I didn't understand some of the parts at the end as well like the curse parts (could be a bug but if he doesn't have the code, how does he create a bug) or the whole hanging from 30th floor part.

I went into the movie completely blind, and it left me feeling lost and unsatisfied. It had some interesting concepts, such as programming as a form of magic and the blending of dreams and reality and the effect of one upon the other. However, the script could've used another round of serious edits. I mean, the first half of the movie was interesting as it established the worlds and switched between them, but after that, things just sort of happened and I wasn't sure why or why I should care.

Kokone is likable as a protagonist (though I wasn't a fan of the voice given by her Japanese actress), but what is her character journey exactly? She wants to go to Tokyo for school in the beginning and then rescue her dad when he gets in trouble, but what does she truly need to do/learn? I feel like those answers aren't clear, if they're given at all. Since that foundation of the film fails, everything else falls apart. The revelations don't matter, the climax doesn't matter, the other characters don't matter---nothing.

And unfortunately, that's what the movie is---not awful, not great, just okay. Two hours for a dream quickly forgotten.

A cute well made movie. Not top tier but a great movie-tier animation.

The story is quite simple and was satisfying to watch.

People are very criticist with movies at the same time that they overvalue shitty series.

Anime Cinema would be better if all movies was at least this quality or beyond.

This was pretty weird. The plot definitely got away from itself at the end. It's unclear exactly the ending events played out in the real world compared to the dream world we were seeing. There were other strange writing choices like the flight receptionists somehow not noticing Kokone sneaking up to steal the bag, or Kokone getting rejected at big motor company and moping outside just to have the bossman himself just be out there by coincidence. Still I didn't dislike the movie. It was whimsical enough and had some fun ideas.
