| Bit of Sunshine is basically a shipping fic. If you're familiar with Gungrave, you should know Brandon and Maria. But if you don't, let me give you a quick overview: Brandon is a street thug, while Maria is a refined lady. A bit of their story in the canon will be told in the fic, which means fandom blindness is no big deal. But what makes this special as a shipping fic? Simple. There's no cheesy "I love you" or something. Brandon's a silent, awkward sweetie, and his actions basically spell out those three magic words throughout the fic. Meanwhile, Maria may have more dialogue than Brandon, but the presentation of those three words are subtly done through her dialogue and actions. The whole fic has fantastic characterization. Aside from Brandon, the star of the show, there is Kenny. That loud little brat is a nice contrast to the silent and mild-mannered Brandon and makes a great comic relief. Also, the concise descriptions will help immerse you into the fanfic and even Gungrave universe. Gungrave world isn't far different from ours, but this fic has more emphasis on the slum environment. So, you may well get the chance to know how a slum looks like. The weakness is only in the narrative, there may be a run-on sentence or two. A bit confusing, but not to the point it's distracting because you can still understand what they are trying to convey by slowing down your reading speed. Highly recommended for a relaxing read. Even if you haven't watched Gungrave, this fic is very easy to read and understand. Pros: + No fandom knowledge needed + Beautiful subtlety in the romantic relationship + Fantastic characterization: Brandon's the superstar, Kenny's the plucky comic relief + Concise, immersive description of the setting Cons: - A few run-on sentences throughout the fic |
