If you want more details on the world, Killy, Killy's purpose, characters and how it all ends, read the manga. The manga is fairly short, action packed and with rather straightforward story that is mostly told visually but also information tidbits are often dropped by characters themselves.

As for the backstory, how it all got started, why did the world become like it is, read the prequel manga NOiSE. NOiSE is only a few chapters long, told in style of noir but is also action packed with some decent horror and it tells pretty much the entire story of how and why the world went to hell and who the heck are those cyberpunk guys that trip up Killy all the time.

Should i ead NOiSE before BLAME? I've read the first volume of BLAME and the story was pretty confusing. I couldn't tell if the events were supposed to be in chronological order and how they were related. Does it become more coherent as it goes?

Sure, I see no issue with reading NOiSE first as it actually came before Blame!. It very undirectly also connects to Killy in a sort-of, remote way.

And yeah, Blame! does become more coherent... for a while at least. Blame! may seem incoherent because it tells it's story with very few words and mostly visually. Pay more attention to visual details and you should be fine. The story is 100% chronological but we often are not told how much time has passed.

Couple of hours? Days? Months? Years? No clue. There are even occasions where some battles happen in a couple of seconds. And there is one occasion later in the story where 40 years passes.

I think Blame! is a manga that can benefit from re-reading. The story directly explains very little (especially at the beginning) and the information you do get from the characters is often presented without too much explanation or context to previous events (pre-manga) that would better explain "why". So it can be difficult to piece it all together in one go.

It probably didn't help either that I took quite long to read through it. Thanks to the information being sparse I likely forgot details that were mentioned earlier.

I'm gonna give NOiSE a go. If it provides context for the state of the world in Blame! it should be an interesting read.

Enjoy!

It's much easier read than Bleach! and I recommend listening to some heavy industrial music with it to amplify the feels.

In fact the brand new Blame! soundtrack is perfect. xD
