Okay, I've been perplexed and fascinated by the show's (and the author's) success in somehow painting Benten not in a villainous light; unlike Soun, Jurojin, or Tenmaya. An amazing feat considering Benten's history.

Let me know if I missed anything :

Benten as a pretty schoolgirl was abducted and taken in as protégé by Akadama. From him she gained (that we know of) Tengu skill of flight, his Fujin Raijin fan, and the floating tearoom.

At some point she affiliated with the Kurama Tengus. And then she somehow got Yasaburo to secretly shapeshift into the cedar tree from which Akadama fell and hurt his back (so-called Demonic Cedar Incident), rendering him flightless ever since and holed up in an apartment in Demachi Shopping District. Meanwhile the Kurama Tengus rule Nyoigatake forest in his place.

Benten also at some point affiliated with Soun, and conspired with him to capture Soichiro for hotpot (the father of the kid who adores her, and helped her in the Demonic Cedar Incident and keeps her involvement secret). This benefited Soun in running for Nise-Emon, and benefited Benten in gaining a seat in the Friday Fellows : she procured not just any Tanuki, but the Nise-Emon.

As a Friday Fellow, she got close to the powerful Jurojin. What she gained here isn't revealed yet.

And she ditched Akadama, Tengu master turned flightless old drunk who mumbles her name in his sleep.

Analysis :

Benten uses everyone and switches sides easily after she's gained what she set out to gain. She was at Akadama's side until she no longer needed him, then went on to the Kuramas and Friday Fellows. She was with Soun for Soichiro's capture, sat by his side at last season's cruiser festival, yet secretly gestured to Yasaburo to use the Fujin Raijin fan to defeat Soun.

Benten seems to hold no real affection or loyalty to anyone, except maybe Yasaburo. But she helps him him when she doesn't need to jeopardize her position, or expose herself as his ally to his enemies. Well, she did expose herself taking Yasaburo's side when she rescued him from Soun and turned him to an umbrella in the rain. But maybe she needed nothing from Soun anymore by that point. She managed to stay on Jurojin's good side while helping Yasaburo in secret.

And after Soichiro, it seems she doesn't want anyone that matters to Yasaburo to come to harm. And maybe that's why she came back to Akadama the end of last season.
