With a sci-fi premise as mature and as promising as what is established in ReLIFE, I was sure the show would actually explore the consequences of such a program and technology existing, how it would affect the people involved, and the moral beliefs formed from these consequences. I was at least expecting some sort of philosophical conflict between the protagonist and Yoake or something, but there's literally NO antagonism in the show. Kind of disappointed that a great premise and a great cast were wasted on rom-com and self-help antics. There was a lot more the show could've done that could ONLY be done with the ReLIFE premise, whereas a group of people that help a NEET confront his problems could be done in any story really. Maybe I'll get a more mature story out of season 2 if they ever make it, maybe I won't. Either way it's a letdown.

I'd like to clarify on a final note that when I say "bait and switch", I dont mean to say the show was advertised under false pretensions. It was not marketed as something greater than it ended up being. The bait-and-switch comes from having watched the first episode or two and seeing that, despite the narrow path it ended up taking, it could've literally taken the ReLIFE concept any direction it wanted.
There is absolutely no reason why I should accept "turn your brain off" as a valid excuse to defend a poor show.

I think the main reason is that the webcomic still ongoing. I don't know exactly until where the show went, but the manga regulary reflect on the relife experience of both Kaizaki and Hishiro through the reports of Yaoke and Onoya. To me, that seem to be the purpose of the serie, and the end of the line. But yeah, we all know what happen when ongoing series are adapted
from what it sounds like, if the manga is still going then it's unlikely the story ever gets substance outside of romantic slice of life

Thats why I dropped the webcomic. For most chapters, you couldve omitted the rejuvenation thing and they wouldve turned out the same.
I was surprised when I saw the 8.2 rating of the show. Didn't watch it though.

I dont think it's bad at what it's doing though, the whole school-romance-SoL stuff. But thats just annoying if it wasnt what you were looking for originally. In case of the webcomic, it probably suffers from being too drawn out as well.

It just goes to show that in anime, writers created convoluted premises to compete in a saturated market, NOT to say something unique.

they would be broke and living under a bridge if they just kept trying to be "unique".

Wont necessarily starve. My brother is an artist and he gets by well enough working in specialized food service. Of course I think it's insulting to artists everywhere if an artist simply chooses to be one only in order to survive. Wasting that ability and that platform on works that say nothing is a special kind of soullessness to say the least

It's the same way in animation as it is in music. If you aren't creating a work of art that evokes the MAJORITY of fans then you aren't going to get any decent compensation. why do you think there is so much harem and SOL in the world of anime these days? these guys gotta make a living. hell they might have amazing and unique anime ideas but they have to stick to something that sells in order to give them an opportunity to create their "unique" work in the future.

Im not saying it doesnt happen, I'm just saying commercialism is trash and artists should have more self-respect than that. The guy/gal who wrote ReLIFE is clearly capable of telling a good story, but he just chose to cash out on mcdonald's-equivalent anime tropes instead. ReLIFE already feels irrelevant as a story and it's not even a year old. It's like, do I even care whether a second season happens? If it goes back to telling mundane melodrama stories then it won't even be worth a watch unless I knew the implied couple ends up together (the thing that didn't happen at the end of season 1), because it would be the only thing I have left to care about the show at this point.

How could a writer have complete creative control over such a story and NOT say "hmm wouldnt it be cool if the policies of the ReLIFE program came into direct conflict with the protagonist's moral beliefs? or perhaps his handler forces him into an ethical dillema that forces him to choose playing it safe for the paycheck or challenging a system on behalf of others" Like, these ideas are so mindbogglingly simple that at this point I'm convinced the author is either a sellout or an uninspired hack.
