Welcome to the official thread of the 2016 MAL-FALC Best Anime Contest.
What is MAL-FALC Best Anime?
MAL-FALC Best Anime is an online popularity contest created for the Filipino Anime Lovers Club which aims to determine the best anime title among the members of the club for every season of the year.
This initial contest features seasonal anime titles aired in each season of the year. In due time, the Pilipinas Best Anime Guy and Pilipinas Best Anime Girl shall launch as well.
We are currently holding a test run of the system we are going to use in our Discord channel using the 2015 titles. Now is the time to involve everyone in this test run, so we would appreciate it if you participate in this test run to iron out any wrinkles in the system and for the members to post suggestions on how to make this contest more exciting.
Best Anime 2015 runs a new poll every day, whereas Best Anime 2016 runs a new poll every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

How does it work?
MAL-FALC Best Anime consists of a series of popularity tournaments among anime titles aired within each of the four seasons, in order: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
In total, there are six (6) tournaments that comprise MAL-FALC Best Anime 2016, ordered as follows:
- Best Winter Anime 2016 [4 / X] - July-August 2016
- Best Spring Anime 2016 [4 / X] - August-September 2016
- Best Summer Anime 2016 [4 / X] - October 2016
- Best Fall Anime 2016 [4 / X] - January 2017
- Best Anime 2016 Wildcard Tournament [16 / 48] - February 2017
- Best Anime 2016 Grand Finals [1 / 32] - February-March 2017
For each seasonal tournament, only one (1) anime title will be crowned the Best Anime for that season.
For each season, sixteen (16) titles will qualify for the Wildcard Tournament, while four (4) of these 16 titles will qualify outright for the Grand Finals.
From the Wildcard Tournament, only sixteen (16) titles will qualify for the Grand Finals, where the best anime of the year in MAL-FALC will be determined.
Eligiblity Rules
- For an anime title to qualify for any of the four seasonal contests, it must be a full-length 1- to 4-cour anime for that season.
- Shorts (basically anything not full-length), kids' shows, and long-running anime like One Piece and Fairy Tail do not count.
- Seasonal titles which started from Fall 2015 are qualified for Winter 2016 provided these are still airing in the latter season and they have not yet qualified for the Wildcard Tournament or the Grand Finals. This also applies for all other seasons up to Fall 2016.
Seasonal titles airing beyond the season when it started shall qualify for the next season provided they have not yet qualified for the Grand Final or the Wildcards.
General Mechanics
- Each seasonal contest consists of three (3) phases: the Preliminary Phase, the Group Phase, and the Final Phase.
- The Preliminary Phase for each seasonal contest may be skipped entirely if the total number of eligible anime titles for that particular season is equal to a suitable number equal to a multiple of a power of 2 (e.g. 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, etc.)
- The Preliminary Phase shall be skipped for both the Wildcard Contest and the Grand Final.
- In the Preliminary Phase, titles are grouped according to number of viewers in MAL from lowest to highest and placed accordingly into pools. All voters may pick as many titles as desired from each pool to qualify for the next round, but at least one (1) title must be picked from each pool to advance to the next pool. The titles that garner the most number of votes shall qualify for the Group Phase.
- In both the Group Phase and the Final Phase, all voters must vote for exactly one (1) title per match for each round, and they can only vote once per round.
- Skipping matches shall be allowed for the Group Phase of every seasonal contest, but not for the Final Phase.
- Skipping matches shall be disallowed for all phases of the Wildcards and the Grand Final.
- In the Group Phase, all titles shall be placed into pots according to any of the following:
- Number of votes garnered in the Preliminary Phase
- Number of viewers in MAL if the Preliminary Phase is skipped
- Ranking in the seasonal contests for the Wildcard Contest
- Ranking in both the seasonal contests and the Wildcards for the Grand Final
- Each title from each pot shall be drawn into their respective groups via either a straight random draw or one with limiting conditions as necessary.
- In the Final Phase, the top two (2) titles from each group shall qualify for the Upper Bracket, while the next two (2) titles from each group shall qualify for the Lower Bracket. In both brackets, the upper seed from one group shall be matched against the lower seed from an adjacent group in a modified double-elimination tournament.
- Losing titles in the Upper Bracket shall be relegated to the Lower Bracket for the next round, while losing titles in the Lower Bracket shall be eliminated. The ranking of each title shall be based on the farthest round they have reached.
- For the Finals of each tournament, the Upper Bracket winner will have a twice-to-beat advantage over the Lower Bracket winner. Should the UB Winner defeat the LB Winner, it shall be crowned the Best Anime for the particular season. Should the LB Winner defeat the UB Winner once, a rematch shall occur, and the winner of this match shall be declared the Best Anime for that particular season.
- The winner of the Grand Final shall be declared the Best Anime in MAL-FALC for the year 2016.
