Macross II: Accessible to Newcomers?

Dear MAL members, dear Macross fans,

would you deem Macross II accesible to newcomers who haven't watched the original 1982 TV series? From what I understand, Macross II is widely considered 'non-canon', so I'd take it that it's a self-contained story -- save for a reference here and there?

Moreover, I heard it vaguely ties to the Do You Remember Love? film. I own that one on VHS, but haven't watched it in about 10 years. Should I give it another run before starting Macross II?

macross II's story is completely standalone, you don't have to watch the original macross or the DYRL movie beforehand.

By the way, what's you guys' stance on the series, quality-wise? Would you say it can be enjoyed on its own merits, regardless whether it's inferior to the original Macross or Macross Plus?
For what it's worth, I really dig II's animation, which is no surprise given my love of Masami Oobari, who was partially key animator/animation director.
