| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Might have my chapters a little mixed up. To help confirm which chapter this is, it's about keeping cool and summer activities. In general, this spin off is just a little risky because, unlike Team Gai, Team Taka is a bit more serious in nature. Using Team Taka means trying to scrape comedy off of a much more dry block of clay. Juugo and Sasuke are more of the concern for me at this point. Juugo's involvement is limited; he really only gets time when he's going into a rage or something with birds comes up. Taira took some liberties with Sasuke in this spin-off; unlike Neji who would be dragged in and forced to react, Sasuke is often the initiator of silly antics. That's a bit more out of character than usual with Taira's works. I feel chapter six shows that Taira's gradually starting to have a better grasp of how these characters are now and how he wants to work with them maybe. Compared to the first chapter, the humor seems less forced with Sasuke in particular and a lot more smooth. Even so, I think this would have been easier to navigate if the manga ran as Sasuke reacting/joining in maybe reluctantly to the antics of his teammates instead of instigating them. As it is, we have Suigetsu in the position of the straight man instead when it's Suigetsu and Karin who often cause most of the problems in the source (though Suigetsu does play straight man sometimes even in the source). Team Taka/Hebi's gag narrative could have easily been one of Sasuke keeping/or failing to keep his teammates in line. TL;DR: Sasuke's out of character in a really odd way; it's getting better. Juugo needs more to him. Or maybe no one else minded the characterizations? |
