I'm new to all these sub groups, and was wondering who is the best subber to go for?

Vivid for sure. Horriblesubs should only be used as a last resort most of the time.

Not Horriblesubs as a general rule, but more specifically Vivid subbed songs and signs so go with them.

Exactly. Most of the time, if we're talking about translation quality, they do a very decent job that's devoid of much of the bullshit (politics, trolling, extemporaneous embellishments, localization, etc...) that you see with some fansub groups. Though, the one thing that I will agree on is the lack of OP/ED translations and good typesetting.

If I'm not mistaken, most of the hate comes from the stigma of being/using "official subs" and not fansubs. For me, I do believe that the official nature of the subs restrains the amount of bullshit that they can put in it, allowing me to watch the show without worry.

Of course, this is on a case-by-case basis since the quality of the official subs and fansubs fluctuate depending on the show. Of course, it also depends on your own tastes, translation preferences and how you define quality.

Was Vivid's work their original TL? Frankly, most people bash HS/CR works because they cannot get karaoke for the songs... And yeah, the typesettings as well. But in terms of translation issue, HS/CR is honestly a prime subtitle source. Vivid sometimes produces Amagi-like memes...

In this case, get Vivid's script. Delete it's Default style and just grabbed its signs and go for HS translation... Just tedious on the down part...

I like other sub groups generally because of the typesetting, especially for signs, notes, cellphone displays/text messages, etc. When a character looks at their phone and silently reads something that they expect the viewer to read as well it helps if that text is in a language you understand. In the case of Durarara, Celty uses text to communicate. Most of the time they have her voice the part for our benefit, but not always.

A lot of the time their editing is better (unless they really go off the deep end with localization, etc). They'll often fish around for the best video source as well, because often CR/HS will get the more heavily censored version of shows. A lot of fansub groups use the CR official subs as the base translation these days anyway, so it's not like everyone just hates on them.

You know I was hoping for the sub groups that did the first season to work on this, and my wish almost got granted, until about a month ago EnigmaCollective said they wont be picking this season up anymore due to key staff absence. As for Anco^2 they're dead, heard the leader went drunk and swam to north korea. Such a shame, EG and anco^2 both did a masterclass on first season.
So the only choices now is definitely, vivid. I dont even need a comparison and I can tell.
How do I signature?

Horrible isn't bad, but not great. I go with them anyway since they're out first.

I'm not a seasonal watcher anymore but it's looking like Vivid is the best in terms of quality. If you want to watch episodes the day they are released however, Horrible's your best bet though don't expect great sub quality. I'm the type that is content with waiting a bit longer for better subs though you may feel differently.

I tried HorribleSubs for the first episode, but there were a lot of lines lacking subs. Did that just happen on the 1080p version, did I get a weird version or did noöne notice? Anyway, the Crunchyroll subs seem okay; much better than anything Funimation have done.

You can always download the HS version first if you don't want to wait till sunday and replace it with Vivid version later when it's ready.
