Outdoor activities such as hiking and camping had never been Jame's strong point. He was the kind of creature that would quickly perish if left in a world ruled by the law of the jungle and the mere fact that he had ignored his natural instinct of avoiding nature served to show just how dedicated he was to his mission. After quickly living the hotel room he woke up in, the boy had found shelter in a cave located in a small patch of forest just outside of town. A perfect workshop for a magus that didn't want to be noticed. While it would take some time to transfer his possessions from the room, where they had been neatly placed, it was much of a concern. What did concern him was how he had ended up in the room in the first place, and with such a painful headache, but that could investigated later. He had more pressing tasks. The night had already fallen and the embers of the fire that lit up the walls of the cave were beginning to die out. It was time to start the ritual.

He wasn't sure how to perform it, but from what he had read all that was needed was a beacon for the holy grail to deliver the Legendary Soul, and a vessel to contain it. Both he had 'acquired' before hand.

'...Vessel? No....that's not...'

A sharp pain stabbed at his head again. He ignored it. Grabbing a piece of charred wood, James kneeled down and skillfully drew a magic circle on the cavern ground. As he stood up he started reciting the chant he had prepared for the summoning.

"Thou art the vessel of my victory
Bound by the chains of death
Thrown into the endless pits of time
I do invoke and conjure thee
O Servant of Heaven
By all the princes of hell and forgers of contracts
I summon you"

The previous serenity began to fade as the boy pronounced the verses. A strong gust of wind blew through the stony den as the lines drawn in the floor began to glow.

"And being armed with power from the Holy Grail
I do strongly command thee
You will battle for the cup of God
Come forth at once!"

Like a burst of lighting, a bright white flash filled the room...The summoning was complete.

Stop. Calm yourself. You're an idiot.

The white light dies down as quickly as it comes, and the cave is left in complete darkness. The last embers of the dying fire are snuffed out with an echoing crack, and the following silence is eerie at best, pressing down heavily on the night.

And then —

"Are you my Master?" a voice asks, sinister and clear like the toll of a bronze bell, affected just minimally by the hard influence of an Eastern accent.

Flames spark from seemingly thin air, clinging to the walls like lamps without container. Their shine illuminates the form of a hunched man, the emerald of his robes stark under the orange light. From beneath a drawn hood, strands of curled white hair peek out, and a pair of searing teal eyes stare at James with a bored expectancy.

"Well?"

The blinding light that had announced the conclusion of the ritual quickly dissipated back into nothing. James' eyes were still adjusting to the dim atmosphere, but he could clearly tell he wasn't alone in that room. Not that surprising since he had just performed a summoning ritual. In front of him was a robed man, hunched over with a drawn hood obscuring most of his face. After a brief moment of mutual examination, the robed man broke the ice and spoke.

'Are you my Master? the man before him asked, his voice like that of a tolling bell. As he did so, he illuminated the dark cavern with conjured flames. With the added light, Jame's could make out white hair from beneath the hood, and a pair of teal eyes, glaring at him

Well?

The boy took a deep breath, and while attempting to ignore the sinister aura that his servant emanated he replied to the question posed to him. "Yes...Yes, I am. I assume from your cave illuminating abilities that you are of the Caster class, correct?"

"I'm James Cutler. From here on... you shall address me as Master."

Caster hums, a sound low in the throat, and it reverberates against the walls of the cave. Straightening his posture briefly, he bows from the waist, right hand going to rest over his heart. It feels odd to have a body again for the first time in so many centuries, but he is far from complaining about it.

The matter of his Master, though, is another thing entirely. "Indeed," he confirms upon being inquired, letting go partly of his overbearing demeanor. He sizes James up with an unreadable glint in his eyes, and the conjured flames dance to the tune of an invisible drum.

Frankly, he looks like a hunter who has just found fresh prey.

"Do you have knowledge my true name, boy?"

James took another breath, as Caster bowed and looked him over in one motion. He hummed a tune, to which the magical flames responded. They danced around the cavern, casting strange and rather unsettling shadows. Despite the man's bow, seemingly a sign of respect, it was obvious the robed man didn't think much of him. The way he looked at him made that clear.

"Do you have knowledge my true name, boy?" Caster asked. James hesitated a few seconds, pondering how best to answer. James knew who he had summoned. Who he had aimed for. He had though long and hard over which Heroic Spirit to summon, and had decided on what many might consider an obvious choice.

I mean, if you wanted to win a war, what better than an immortal soldier?

"You are a Deathless man, with a fondness for young women" He replied, making sure not to actual state Caster name. While he was sure no-one else was around, he thought it better to be safe than sorry. It wouldn't do to have his Servant's identity exposed right away.

Stop. Calm yourself. You're an idiot.

Caster nods gravely, satisfied with the considerate way James had chosen to answer his question. Perhaps the boy wasn't as empty-headed as he looked, then, and he couldn't even begin to explain how much of a relief that was; after all, nothing is worse than being partnered with a fool.

Still, he couldn't let him rest easy. There were tests left for him to pass - tests that would litter their path in this war of malice and unscrupulous wit, tests that perhaps he won't even be able to tell are tests. How did that say of mother's go...? Keep thy enemies close, but keep thy friends on their toes...

"Very good," he says, raising to full height, squaring his shoulders. "You may now look at me with the eyes of a true Master, and learn all there is to know about my power. I figure you have a general idea of what I can do, but you must be curious for the sake of curiosity, if not for the necessity of strategy."

The flames dancing on the walls grow larger, bathing the cave in more light. Outside the night sky seems to be brewing the beginning of a storm; the winds hurl and buzz with unnatural quietness, almost as if not by their own volition.

Humming the tune of a tavern song, Caster pulls back his hood and draws up his sleeves. Strange markings paint a surprisingly youthful and handsome face, run in lines of white down strong arms, disappear under his heavy robes, carved into his whole body.

Paying no heed to his Master's curious gaze, the man sets to work on setting up his territory.
