To meet the schedule deadline, they better work hard. God I hope the quality won't be like that girl running on the beach. Interesting episode overall with the high tension in the air. Cute glasses though:

Poor Ema... I definitely know the way she's currently feeling. Trying to perfect something, so it can look/function as good as possible is like a double edged blade. Finding the practical balance between effort and time is a tough feat to pull off for some people, including myself. That really takes you down on your feet sometimes, especially in a serious work environment. Even the slightest bit of criticism hurts a lot, as with Miyamori's case. I hope Ema will overcome that burden somehow later on, with a bit of help from Sugie's experience.

On a side note, did Miyamori get slighly drunk from taking a single sip again? It's either due to her workload or just being soft in general.

I believe most people got instantly turned off by the large cast, because that was almost the case with me. Either that or not everyone can appreciate all the small bits and bobs, and of course the amout of effort involved in making anime in general.

I love this show, their fictional anime names are hilarious:

Ema really is working hard trying to master her drawing skills even though she's having a rough time... I hope she can improve her skill :).
Aoi gets drunk easily, she started drinking and her face was already blushing.
The future looks scary for Aoi and Ema as far as I can tell.
Good episode.

Cute relationship Oi-chan have with her sister too.

"Melting":

"Melting" is a quality problem having to do with the "in-between frames". The
"in-between frames" are the frames that come between the "key frames" (原画).
Something bad happens if the quality of the animation of the in-between frames
is poor. It appears to be degraded. This situation is commonly described by
animators using the word "melting" (溶ける/tokeru).

They very clearly illustrate "melting" in this episode. There is a conversation
from 17:30 to 17:50 between "A" and "B" (talking on the phone) where:
A = Aoi Miyamori
B = brown banged braided hair lady = Segawa-san = Misato Segawa
At 17:38, you can hear B say "nakawari", talking about the in-between frames.
Then, at 17:39 you can hear "B" say "tokechau", which means "melted". At 17:42,
you can hear Aoi repeat the word "tokechau". Also, from 17:40 to 17:43, they
show animation of a woman running in a white-topped bikini. The quality is
poor. This shows us the concept of "melting" due to Ema's poorly-drawn
key frames. As the Animation Supervisor, Segawa-san realized that good
in-betweens could not be made from such poor key frames. So that is why
Ema had to start again and do it over.

In order to help the fans to understand the technical terminology used in each
episode, the official website has a very long phrase list. Here it is, in Japanese:
http://shirobako-anime.com/words.html

Each week, some new phrases are added to the list. For Episode 7, the single
new phrase is "nakawari ga tokeru" (中割りが溶ける). This means "melting of the
in-between frames".

In Japanese, here is specifically what their explanation of "nakawari ga tokeru"
says:

It makes sense that proven professionals are scouted by the big companies, while through idiots are slowly ostracised/given the most awful tasks.

About Shirobako having a score of 7.24 in MAL, IMO if you do not have a certain degree of mental maturity you can't recognize the value of this series. The producers know that and that is why the included the Initial-D racing sequences at the beginning, to see if they could make some people to watch the whole episode at least.

Poor Ema is being to hard on herself and not asking for help, as sad as it seems this is something the happens pretty often with new employees.
They are afraid to ask the others do to age, seniority or just because they seem busy.
While usually the others don't mind being asked things at all.
I have seen it happen several times and to be honest i had trouble asking as well with my first job.

Man are the Initial D-like sequences so unnecessary. Doesn't fit with the adult atmosphere and tone of this series.

I'm just poking fun at Tarou btw, since all he has to offer so far are bad jokes and bad character. I don't even recall Tatsuya actually being there as someone with relevance or presence. What I really want to see more of in this series is what was offered this episode, with that older veteran animator giving advice to the young newcomer, and also the newcomer revealing her frustration and struggles to Miyamori. Stuff like the director being caged and Tarou being a bad comedian can take a hike!

MAL scores? No idea what those are... haha

the target audience of this show and the ones who would probably appreciate it are usually not the kind of people that hype up their ratings or don't rate until this is over. other commercially popular series tend to have more people who give free 9's or 10's. assuming that the show remains consistently good until it ends, expect a rise in the ratings by then. i've seen this trend in MAL many times before.

It was nice to see the show focus a little bit more on some of the other "main" characters. I wish that Ema had a little bit more screentime before this episode, because her feeling of guilt feel a little...random?

Also, we finally get to see something from Jiggly Heaven. I could only imagine what a full series like that must have been like. That animation was atrocious. And three recap episodes?! Oh my goodness.

As one measure of the popularity of this series among anime fans in Japan, the
"Amazon Stalker points" are looking pretty good (in my non-expert opinion):

BD = Blu-ray regular edition
BDSLE = Blu-ray special limited edition
DVD = DVD regular edition
DVDSLE = DVD special limited edition

Volume 1 (on sale Dec 24) BD: 3025 BDSLE: 295 DVD: 204 DVDSLE: 84

These numbers are current as of this moment.

I think that maybe some people in Japan are buying the BDs/DVDs because
this series is a serious attempt at documenting their anime industry. In Japan,
producing anime is one of their national treasures. It is something that is
unique to Japan, along with Flower Arranging, the Tea Ceremony, Kendo
and so on. Re-watching this series has a lot more enduring significance since
it is very unlikely that anybody else will do the same thing for years to come.

Damn. Ema's struggle was pretty hard to watch. Having to retake all the cuts and being criticized by a senior animator. With so much negativity in the air, she's being even more tough on herself. *Sigh..

Really hope she recovers and discusses her predicament with Ogasawara and Iguchi.

Good episode. Didn't quite get why Miyamori's Onee-chan had to be added to the cast. She doesn't seem to be anyone special to the plot anyways.

Hmm, it's a real conflict for Ema... to work fast and be efficiently, or to be thorough and meticulous. I myself always vouch for the latter, but especially in an environment as an anime production company, both are really needed. Hope things light up for her soon. It's always seemed like she's the A-blood type and isn't quite confident in her abilities.

I always watch this show after watching the other anime thats sort of about industry: Denki-gai as I need something to wash away the extreme boringness that I just went through and once again Shirobako delivers.

I find it incredible that even though both are about industry Denki's is clearly more about comedy and takes a lot of creative liberties whereas Shirobako doesn't try to be hilarious and for me Shirobako just completely destroys Denki-gai in all aspects.

Not as fast paced of an episode as the last few but I'm glad they're giving other characters developmental screen time.

Seriously DO NOT understand how this anime is rated so low and really unappreciated this season. It's got great characters, beautiful animation, a nice story setup and pretty good depiction of what the industry is like [I guess]. Even if they told me tomorrow that this had absolutely nothing in common with how it is in real life, I wouldn't be pissed because it's a great show non the less. Very underrated anime so far to say the least.

As shown in this episode discussion, Ema's a really relatable character, or at least what she's going through at the moment. Unfortunately for her job, the quality is not something she can compromise, even if it means being slow, which is really sad because I can feel her frustration. But being fast and meticulous really can't be picked up overnight. It's just like, in a way, how some manga I've read started out with meh art and then become gorgeous over time. I'm sure not only did the mangaka start to improve with his/her art but also how quick he/she can get the drawings done. Good luck Ema! ><

And lol with Jiggly Heaven, that was some beautiful animation. Nice to learn about what "melting" is. Also, Ochiai leaving for a even better studio! That's kind of sad, we barely saw him.

The first chart estimates each individual's income per day (in yen) while the second one is annual income (in $, someone from Reddit estimated it).

It's sad to imagine that animators who basically do the hardest part of an animation production are the ones that paid the littlest. To add salt to injury, a lot of anime fans can name studios, VAs, creenwriters, directors, composers and recognize their works but definitely not animators.

I agree with this. And one of this show's good points is that it is well informative but it lacks what another very similar themed show (Bakuman) has which is the attachment to the characters and having a clear goal in the story.
