Here's my little theory about who Amil Gaoul really is and you won't like it.
To be short, say hello to Satan.
Yup, our angelic spirit is a clear Lucifer reference no matter what angle you look at him. Here are but a few facts about him hinting at it:
1. -The dots on his cheeks - at start they look like freckles, but on more thorough inspection you'll notice they're not. There are 3 of them on each cheek and then there are two more sets of those on his chest and waist. Forming 3 rows of 6 dots - 666 anyone? If that wasn't enough notice the shape they take - a triangle pointing downwards. It is not a big secret that God is often depicted via a symbol of a triangle pointing upwards with all seeing eye inside. Such triangle reversed to point downwards is usually believed to be a symbol of man's toilet...or satan.
2. His overall appearance - just one look at most spirits tells they're not running a beauty contest there - yet Amil has clearly christian angel looks. This once again fits perfectly with Lucifer who was an angel of unparalleled beauty and might before being cast out from the heavens - horns, tail and reddish skin are anything but the traits Lucifer had.
3. His power - Lucifer was probably the most powerful of all angels in his day - dealing with him was no easy task, it is possible that back then his power was 2nd only to God himself. And here Amil Gaoul stands in the very same place - strongest of all the spirits, his power being 2nd only to Taskar, which could be considered this world's god.
4. His unwillingness to obey a human. Some christian religions claim that the very reason for Lucifer to rebel against God was because he would not bow down to first humans, as God ordered him to. And this is again seen with Zed. Zed didn't choose Amil, Amil chose Zed. And on more then one occasion it is shown that Amil does what he wants when he wants. He does save Zed quite a few times and fights for him when needed, but that's more of his own will/seeing things same way as Zed, rather then any form of obedience.
In stark contrast to that are other 5 key spirits who seem to be completely obey their master's will. Best prove would be Shadin - having the weakest master of all 6 still does not rebel or act out of line in anyway. Something Amil Gaoul did a lot at beginning of series. Also it's again clearly stated and shown, that while all key spirits will reject someone unfit for them, only Amil Gaoul goes to very extremes in doing so. Rest will no show their true power, tire the unwanted master out, but nowhere near to what Amil does to unwanted hosts.
5. Tasker - well when all 6 spirits combine they form this guy, and it's been clearly shown he's definitely not an all loving, merciful God. Both his looks and attitude give clear impression of worst Evil to hit the world, and that's regardless of his host, so you can't say "Host was impure/evil, so tasker turned out this way".
And who is Tasker's main component? Probably Amil. Even if not that still doesn't explain where all that evil came from. Spirits themselves save for Sachira maybe don't appear to be evil nor good. Rather netural or obedient of their master. So where is all this evil from, and why isn't it offset by Amil Gaoul's good if he's a good guy and strongest of the bunch?
So why Amil went against Tasker? Maybe he was a good guy...or maybe he hated they idea of sharing power with 5 other spirits and having his will infected with theirs? If there's one thing both Zed and Amil clearly shown it's the desire for freedom. And being clamped with 5 other spirits in a form you cannot fully control is not freedom.
6. His exile - Amil is the only key spirit to visit and eventually stay in another realm to his natural spirit realm. He ends up with Zed in Calm, while rest stay in their world. Not forcefully maybe, but it does again remind we-know who, who got ousted from high heavens and thrown down to earth.
7. Zed's possession/unity with zed - at the end scene it's clear they merged into one being or Zed has been possessed. Notice that last thing before that was Zed fighting Amil, not offering to be together. We don't know what happened after that but it's clear Zed had good reasons to dislike Amil at that time.
And possession is a thing attributed to evil spirits, especially demons. You don't hear about good angels possessing humans, now do you?
So it could be said that amil fully entered Zed's body, which now is his shared host, and reigns in realm of calm as the strongest and only key spirit there, at least for the time being. Doesn't that sound familiar for those who know the Bible.
So in the end - Zed you poor sod:( |
