I've never been able to get through the whole series. But this OVA kept me hooked the entire time. It seemed more serious than the goofy nature of the series.

While this OVA in my mind is considered a masterpiece the 2nd one failed to adapt manga properly and it resulted peole having mixed feelings over it.

Of course everyone who enjoyed the main series should watch this majestic beauty beacuse I guarantee they wont be dissapointed

The series is quite good overall if you skip the fillers (i didn't, unfortunately).
If you're willing to dismiss the entire series based on its "goofy nature", then something tells me that you never even reached the Kyoto/Shishio Arc.

I found the main series to be decent. I liked it but I won't be rewatching it anytime soon. There were many things in the main series I didn't like, even in the Kyoto arc .But I loved everything about this OVA. It completely surpassed the main series IMO.

This ova is what second half of the Kyoto arc in the series should have been instead of giving shounen style one on one match-ups.

I like to pretend everything else related to Rurouni Kenshin doesn’t exist aside from this amazing OVA :D

You all are beyond stupid, this ova is a darker version of the rememberance arc that kept some key of kenshin in him that was erased here, as an adaptation it fails but as itself its a masterpiece, plus the kyoto arc is better

It's exactly why it's that much beloved.

The past of Kenshin is so gruesome and sad , that the comedy just tone down it too much.
This adaptation , by removing it , made his past more "realistic" , on top of making his present and mindset even more admirable.
I'm not really a fan of sad stories , but the way the OVA handled this pan of the story is just way more impactful.

An adaptation doesn't need to follow 1:1 the source material to be a great one.

as itself its a masterpiece for sure but to say that the comedy was bad on a sad past is just a preference for writing style, the ova took out their own writing style and that's perfectly fine but to say that it blows the rememberance arc is beyond stupidity

I think that this OVA in an attempt to be more "mature" ended up being comical in an ironic way. Take for example how Tomoe cries in episode 3 after her cultivation dies... what is that supposed to mean? It's overly dramatic to where it's almost comical...
On the other hand by eliminating the lighthearted moments, you rarely see why Kenshin would mature and change his approach to life. He seems depressed the whole time, but at the end he supposedly understands the happiness of the people he was trying to protect? Also, it's impossible to understand why Kenshin and Tomoe would fall in love when they almost seem like strangers...
It really hurt the OVA to remove the kids that used to come to play with Kenshin and Tomoe during their time in hiding
I think this OVA is a hot mess at the end of the day compared to the manga. It doesn't have to follow the manga to be a good adaptation, but the approach that they take here cheapens the material significantly

Edit: been meaning to write a take-down of this OVA for years now, really should get around to it ^^;;
