1. Yes, Lawrence knew in advance, but he didn't know how she'd take the news and never had a good chance to tell her (hard to tell someone as obviously lonely as she is that the home she wants to go to is probably destroyed) And given her reaction he was right to worry. She found out about it the worst way, too, because he wasn't there to explain himself. By the time he got back, she had pretty much lost her mind and wasn't thinking rationally anymore. Note that having venting all of her frustration out on him, she actually figured it all out just before he left. But she didn't stop him before it was too late and things began to spiral out of control. Bear in mind that Lawrence hasn't abandoned his dream of opening shop, he's just put it on hiatus.
2. Holo was being stupid, just like Lawrence. She didn't think he would go up the stairs to confront her, so she left him a token of forgiveness (Amarti's earnings). But that wasn't good enough - her sense of balance would be upset if he didn't also get angry enough at her to have an outburst like she just had. So she also needlessly left him the marriage certificate (the innkeeper says it was her, not Amarti). She didn't even stop to consider what it meant beyond what she wanted it to mean, and that was why she waited upstairs (if he saw her waiting for him, he likely wouldn't get angry).
3. Holo was being stupid again, and instead of figuring out why Lawrence was acting against reason, she still thought she just needed give him an excuse to come see her. Of course, it was probably the flimsiest possible plan she could have come up with, so Murphy's Law dictates that it fail in spectacular fashion.
4. She was lying about not being able to read, because Lawrence wasn't telling her why he was going to visit Diana. But she couldn't leave it well enough alone so she set herself up for some pain. Diana likely sent Lawrence the letter just so Holo would get it - after all, she had no more news to offer Lawrence. But his story would certainly have tipped her off - he's a merchant missing all the Pyrite crazyness just to try to find out about Yoitsu, and the only story he has to offer is about the Wisewolf Holo in Pasloe. Diana had been unable to win the heart of a human, so she would probably be pretty interested to find out what was going on between Lawrence and Holo.
5. At first Holo wanted to play Amarti for a fool to help Lawrence make some money back, because he'd lost a good chunk of his cash and confidence in the previous story (note how harsh she was about him only selling nails). Lawrence knew she was just screwing around, but once she tore a strip out of him, he lost the rest of his confidence and thought she might really leave him. Holo basically just doesn't understand a guy like Lawrence, and because it's hard for her to change her ways, she keeps trying to get him to change instead. In this story, everything went utterly wrong because she didn't stop to really think about why he was trying to "spoil her plans" (to con Amarti). |
