Prior to the late 2000s anime had shows that demonstrated an anti-escapism that celebrated human growth and progress that was related to believing in ones self. Haibane Renmei is an example of coming to terms with sin and receiving forgiveness for others, so that you can achieve salvation or to progress as an individual. Many other shows that have anti-escapist messages include Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Welcome to the NHK, Texhnolyze, Planetes just to name a few. The medium as a whole has shifted from focusing and celebrating human progression to wanting to avoid reality entirely and live in another world. Recent examples of this revelry in escapism include Accel world, Sword Art Online, Log Horizon, Btoom! and No game no life just to give you a few examples. Do you feel that this not so subtle shift that has occurred in the last decade is the degradation of anime industry or is escapism merely a theme of our times? Is it time and space specific to our decade just as the 1980s was largely about mutual assured destruction that reflected the Cold war Era?
