THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I thought this episode was definitely better than the last as it reflected more of memories. That blue little creature is also back. Ah..

Heh, Yukari has a lot of wisdom.

I love Uogokoro-kun. For those of you who love fanservice and perhaps even
Ecchi and Hentai, here is a picture of Uogokoro-kun not wearing . . .

Nanako, I'm sure Billiken-sama has learned at least a little Japanese by now. And, if I had to make an assumption, I'd say he probably pre-dates the arrival of the Europeans to the Americas so English probably isn't his native language anyway - if anything, maybe try Choctaw (though I admit that the name does sound suspicious, maybe it's just a recent new nickname...).

According to Wiki, as far as one can trust it:

""The God of Things As They Ought to Be."

The Billiken was a charm doll created by an American art teacher and illustrator, Florence Pretz of Kansas City, Missouri, who is said to have seen the mysterious figure in a dream.[1] It is believed that Pretz found the name Billiken in an 1896 poem by the Canadian poet Bliss Carman and gave the name to her figure. In 1908, she obtained a design patent on the ornamental design of the Billiken,[2] which she sold to the Billiken Company of Chicago. The Billiken was elephant-like with pointed ears, a mischievous smile and a tuft of hair on his pointed head. His arms were short and he was generally sitting with his legs stretched out in front of him.

To buy a Billiken was said to give the purchaser luck, but to have one given would be better luck."

Billiken statues began to appear in Japan prior to the Second World War.

The points I liked best in this episode was when the trio were talking about their dreams on the roof of the school and later bonding as they enjoyed their Tanuki cupcakes and walked home together. Nanako's reluctance to eat the cake was cute.

Here is a real Billiken statue in Japan: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QkHjFarucgY/TB9K4c49IBI/AAAAAAAAB6o/c6cKdOa0h1g/s320/NanoJapan+Set+7+015.JPG

That was a great way to celebrate. Nanako's reaction to Yui and Yukari eating the cute creature chocolate cake was hilarious.

Billiken was a famous god of luck in Osaka who born in America, that surprised me.

I absolutely love Saori's secret stalker techniques:
* emotionless face
* talk professionally while rapidly snapping candid photos

BRILLIANT.

Nanako just called a local god ugly XD

Yukari: "He's famous in Osaka"
*Nanako apologizes in Kansai-ben*
Yukari: "But he was born in America..."
*Nanako tries to speak in English*

If I was to eat a tanuki cake, I'd save the tanuki character for last :)

"Goal achieved.. 10 seconds of effort"

LOL

This anime isn't extravagantly funny but every episode is guaranteed to have at least 1 really hilarious moment. Nanako trying to speak Osakan dialect and then English was quite funny too.

Uogoro-kun's back story was amusing, didn't expect the fish is actually the important one XD but damn, 13 kg.. how the fuck did Yui do those flips? (not to mention her huge breast must have added to the weight too)

Enjoyed this episode. I get the feeling that this show has the potential to improve (bumped rating to 6).

It's been talked about in previous episodes but kind of came together in this particular one, the girls have to shoulder quite a heavy responsibility, a lot of time, money, & effort is spent on trying to make them a success to promote the town. And they are very aware of it.
It's sad in a way because in real-life, the chance of failure is likely, part of the reason why the Japanese government has cut funding for regional mascots.

^ Well said. At first glance, this show features boingy fanservice, Yuri subtext and
the creepy manager. (All great stuff, mind you.)

Digging a little deeper, this seems like the most serious anime series this cour. It
directly faces the economic and social reality in Japan today.

I am guessing that viewers in Japan are all too aware of that. It might be a reason
why this series is not so successful there based on BD/DVD pre-orders. Probably
it is kind of depressing for them to watch.

There seems to be a recent trend of "anime noire" ("noire" = "black" in French)
such as Aku no Hana and Watamote with dark yet reality-based themes.

The harsh fact is that Japan is the country with by far the largest debt/GDP ratio
in the world. It also has an approaching demographic age crunch. Energy is also
a big problem. And then on top of all that came the Fukushima disaster. There will
be a horrific period of readjustment.

Given that, cheerfully singing the Uogokoro-kun song (which is all about working
together) is probably an excellent idea. Rubbing the soles of Billiken's feet definitely
won't hurt.

--------------

On another topic:

At 17:10/24:16 Yui says,
"A yorishiro can't abandon its object of worship.
The suit I wear is just an optional water drop spirit.
The actual object of worship is the fish on my back."

The concept of a "yorishiro" (依り代) is explained here:

Ooh, we have something to look forward to next week.

Almost had a history lesson this episode. Looked up the Billiken, apparently it's the mascot for a university in Missouri. Very interesting, lol.

Cute, sweet, simple episode, just how I like it. Had a girl crush on seeing Yukari in the Uogokoro-kun suit.

Oh, also, according to Nyanako's luck...I want my college apps to write themselves!

That manager was hilarious at the beginning. snapping candid pics secretly all the whilst holding a conversation with them. I lol'd so hard there.

And then she launches her motivating speech about how if she and Yukari work really hard then they'll catch up with Yui someday, only to be shut down immediately by instant success. That scene had me in stitches.

the main quality of this show is it's originality
it is not mandatory to have the best soundtrack, the best art, not the best drama
all it takes is a good idea

idk if this show is having success in japan, but at least i the web i think it is underrated

In fact, there is some good news about this! Originally, Locodol had been
performing quite poorly, but now it has surged ahead. So it looks like it has
finally caught the attention of Japanese fans. Have a look at Rederoin's
updated list as of August 4th:

5/5

Episode that is very slice of life, narrative rhythm and quiet too deep, with reflections somewhat unusual, very suitable for those who want to know more about the history.
I did not expect really.
The plot is not bad, is more serious than it might make it appear, giving the anime a different perspective from the initial one.
Drawings and animations of a good standard.
