Gun x Sword - Is Mecha necessary in this anime

Hi,

I was watching gun x sword the other day and I thought to myself why are there robots in it? The anime seems like it would have been good without the robots and it seems like an unnecessary addition. Alternatively, would you say that the use of robots makes more sense later on in the series and is appreciated more later on. What do you guys think?

As we are talking about the anime would you say it is a good anime? I ask because I've watched a few episodes but it's moving a bit slowly and hasn't really picked up. It also seems a episodic which I'm not fond of usually (but episodic is okay in Samurai Champloo) so is this the case?

The mecha end up being plot relevant, I think. I'm not sure that they're really necessary, because you're right, much of story could have been told without them. But the flavor of the series would be different. Some things later in the series would be harder to pull off without the mecha. I think at its heart, this IS a mecha series rather than just a western/revenge tale. But I am not a huge mecha fan, so I might be the wrong person to ask!

The series starts off as very episodic and becomes much less so. If you can stick it out until about episode 11 or so, it will stop being a monster-of-the-week series and start being a series with a clearer central plot.

This is, to me, the major flaw of the series, and I think it puts off a lot of viewers who might have liked it if it had been more plot-driven from the beginning. I found the show got most interesting once the plot really kicked in, a bit later, although I did like some of the early episodes.
