I've not read the entirety of the novel, even though I mean to, but something is off about the plot and the final twist (yes, I spoiled myself the whole thing *Genius*).

One between Rita and Keiji has to die to destroy the mimics server once and for all.

...But didn't something like this already happen? I can recall at least one time in the loops Keiji lived when all the conditions were met.
During one of the first loops Keiji tried to run away from the military, but he got killed from a mimic; this happened the day before the battle. Meaning that the following day Rita was alone facing the mimics: now, if she followed the procedure correctly, she was the only looper still alive at the time the server was destroyed. Weren't the loops supposed to end at that point, with Keiji simply staying dead?

Thanks in advance to the people that will clarify this matter to me! :)

If you are already this far ahead you are pretty much near the end. Anyways, well no, actually it's only Rika who has to die to end the loop; if Keiji dies nothing really happens.

If I remember correctly what she said to Keiji in that scene was that she has been through the loops so much she became a backup server herself with no control over the loop trigger. She trained Keiji, and fought himi to the death without holding back to test him. To make sure he was strong enough to replace her, because she knew the only way to end was for her to die. Her last word to him were something like "end the war quickly so that what happened (the become an unwilling server thing) to me doesn't happen to you".

I get it now, thanks. It's just that I got confused with something that Rita said to Keiji when they fought each other: she told him that only one of them could survive and become the savior of this world, and that battle would show them which one. But I guess she might have said it only to force Keiji to fight her.

It's very reminiscent of the final battle of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
