THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
.... You know, sometimes I curse myself because before watching this episode, I said to my boyfriend, "I bet this episode will be serious since it's not going to be long and 3 is usually serious."

I cursed myself because this was much sadder than I had expected, wow... It's kind of sad because it FMA was playing on Adult Swim with the volume down right next to the computer monitor and that's what I kept thinking of..

The killing of children and making people was bad enough, but then it went mad and killed her...? That was so sad, too, and then poor Rahzel bugging out... it didn't even look like it would have been that strange of a creature - poor Viola. Was Rahzel created? I don't know..

I love the two guys together, too, they make an awesome team and I love seeing everyone getting along and communicating the way they do - I always love that in animes, I guess, hehe. Traveling companions are great...

But, yeah, that was a very, very dark episode and I am sure they will get into the feelings she has about it more in the next episode since it seems it would be a very traumatizing experience for her and she has a tendency, so far, to talk about past episodes and thoughts and feelings.

I loved the episode... so sad, though... Romario was really cute.

I am just so confused right now. I mean, I like ther character, I find them intersting, there was just no character introduction at all. Nearly every moment of the first 3 eps so far I have to stop and think to myself, "Wait...wut?"

This doesn't help that the director absolute trash. One moment they're in a carnival and the next they get surprised that there's a circus. One moment they're fighting the clowns and figure out that they're puppet, the next scene they're confronting the Ringleader with no further mention of the deadly puppets. One moment Alzeid shoots Violet or whatever and in the same scene the guy's already dead.

I just heard the very start of a gunshot as soon as this frame apeared. Give me a second inbetween the gunshot and the reveal to make the reveal all that more speacial.

There's some good parts though, the characters definitly have chemistry together which is something I can't say for 90% of anime out there. If they could just help me out so I wouldn't be so gosh dern confused.

Edit: Wait...wut? It's only gonna run for 10 eps? What is that?

Yea not really sure what to think about this show. Seems like it will just be 10 filler episodes and nothing more. Going to keep watching it though.

i quite liked the episode so it got a bit more watchable now. (watchable enough to watch all)

The end of the episode sounds a bit already like the end of a whole show.

First of all, yes we already know it's somewhat confusing. Stop talking about that. Second of all, if Alzeid was shooting voila in the head, then of course it's going to be dead when you get the next scene. Nothing surprising about that.

Anyways, I really don't mind that the show isn't going along with the manga. Since I like the characters, and the voice actors, I'm going to keep watching even if I don't always understand why they're doing something.

At the very, very start of the gunshot Viola is already good and gone, flat out dead, on the floor already. It takes you completely out of the moment that they did a very excellent build up toward. If I shoot you, in the head, when you're standing, there is a period of time between when the gun goes off and when you are lying completely still on the floor.

There needs to be something, anything in between those two shots. Black space, a reaction from Rahzel, the body falling, something, anything. It doesn't make any sense from an editing perspective why those two scenes are juxtaposed with the audio cues that it has.

And I will continue to point out that there was a lack of any sort of opening characterization until there is.

Keep in mind this is anime. Magical-based anime. Exactly how is it supposed to be realistic?

And I'm basing my liking the characters from reading the manga.

It doesn't have to be realistic, but my suspension of disbelief can only be stretched so far. Without proper editing or a multitude of other things that is easily broken, and not just for me, for everyone.

I think they are trying to throw us into the middle of their story since the anime isn't supposed to be so long and even Rahzel comments in each episode how she barely knows anything about them, but since this episode was really dark, I bet it will continue into the next one and soon we will see Heat's intro, I am sure.

I also did not find the episode confusing but maybe that's because I have watched so many travel-animes. lol. They are traveling around, so each episode is something different and I am pretty sure they weren't surprised there was a circus, as much as Rahzel probably never went to one when she was little, so she was excited like a child.

I also think that they figured they didn't need introductions right away since they all have such distinct personalities.

I get the impression that this anime doesn't follow a linear plot line. Every episode seems to be a standalone which can be watched even if you missed the previous one. The only thing that is connecting this anime together are the three main characters.

Either way, the show is quite entertaining regardless of the lack of any real plot. Sure there are the mysteries surrounding the three, but I still don't see much of a plot in relation to the shown episodes.

There might be the time constraints of having only 10 episodes, but at least do the intro episode on the second episode. I hope that they can somehow pull the episodes haruhi-style, which would be awesome if done right. Let's see how the studio handles this :-)

The OP/ED is enough to make me watch...xD

Finally, a little action in the anime. And i agree that this anime is kinda confusing. It's like when i'm watching flashbacks. Kinda wierd, but still, i'll watch it 'til end. ^^,

I feel bad for the mother who never got her kid back. How does it feel to have your kid just disappear forever. At least she won't know he was cut up for his body parts. Ugh. Yeah, sad episode compared to the previous ones. I might look into reading the manga for this since the anime seems to be really geared more towards the manga readers. Unless they manage to provide a bit of background for the main characters in the remaining 7 episodes (well they have had some background already, I think we might have to pierce things together).

I think they will have to soon since the characters have such deep personalities.

I felt so bad for the mom, that would be sooo horrible.

The directing is horrible, what were they thinking...
It's still somewhat enjoyable nevertheless thou, enough to watch the whole thing at least. But seriously, this could have been sooo much better.

huh...this is the third episode. didn't read the manga, so don't really know what is going on. what are the characters' past, and the solid reason why 3 of them are travelling together. besides alzeid, what does the rest of the team want to get out of all these travelling. put that aside, this show is still entertaining to me, enjoying the performances of the seiyuus that i know.

Enjoyable to watch, but as others have mentioned, the directing is definitely nothing special.

Wondering where the actual plot and story of the anime is... Seems like it's just going to be seven more episodes of "filler" or random storylines that seem unrelated.

Anyway yeah, I was surprised that the ringmaster actually did something so cruel. o_o And I feel bad for Romario's mother, who never found him in the end... It's weird though. It didn't seem like she was that upset or that she was searching as best as she could. :|

Most anime out there focus on the plot and characters. Hatenkou yuugi has no plot to speak of, and the characters havent developed much (so far). It deals much more with theme, like abandonment, betrayal, revenge.

Oh my, this was sad. I feel terrible for Romario’s mother… Losing a family member is hard, much more if it’s your child.

I agree, directing isn’t very good. I guess they just wanted to do an episodic anime in which a plot-line isn’t kept, and it’s only the general concept, the background of the story.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

It was upsetting for sure, and the mother keeps looking for him. This anime is def darker than you'd think. And a little confusing I mean they never explained much about the characters in the beginning so we'll see.

I just hate when they have to put kids in danger or kill them x_x; and just for his hands and arrggh!!

Anyways want to talk more about this anime message me!

The only sad thing was that she took the boy away and the mother was left with no idea about what happened to him.
The circus master and the dolls needed to go though.

The FMA comparison really brings to mind why the show’s emotional pull falls flat to me. In FMA the chimaera incident feels brutal not just for its evil nature, but providing a dark mirror for Ed and Al- warnings of what ultimate monsters they could become. It actively shapes their characters for the rest of the series even though it takes up just a small section. Hatenkou Yuugi by comparison doesn’t really go beyond the act itself being dark.

The narrative is more of a loose adventure so there isn’t a lot of weight to the drama. This maybe wouldn’t be as big of an issue if the regular adventures were engaging enough but they just don’t meet that mark. The action is so poorly done that it’s difficult to resonate with any conflict the characters get into or try to resolve.
