I am surprised by the rating for this show. I came here looking for anime like .hack//sign, however, all of the recommendations focus heavily on how it takes place in an RPG, whereas in .hack//sign unlike a lot of the .hack franchise, I felt that took a back seat to what I felt was an in depth and introspective character study. I also felt people were scoring it negatively for it's slow pacing, whereas, I felt that served to strengthen this show and make it unique.

"X anime is set in an RPG, therefore it is like .Hack//SIGN."
No, no, nooo. Looking down the list of recommendations, the only one I felt got it right was the recommendation for Lain, and thats way down there. I obviously took something away from .hack//sign that flew right over most people's heads, and I find that reflected in the list of recommendations and the overall rating.

Plenty of people love the hell out of .hack (specifically //sign), it's just that the majority of people can't handle the pacing in it is all. Deliberate pacing is often times slow, and while it may actually help things as a whole it does not stop people from viewing it as a negative aspect. There's a reason SAO is rated higher than //sign - that is because of the pacing and the very completely in your face blatant "you don't need to think at all" attitude of it. It's terrible, but it has more mass appeal.

I love .hack//Sign

I never got bored of it, contrary to popular opinion. It's the best mmorpg anime made to date.

It's not so much that I don't feel it s appreciated enough, it is that I wanted to find an anime that was deep and meaningful, and the top suggestion is Sword Art Online. People are so damn shallow.

SAO is as far from deep or meaningful as possible, it's only recommended for .hack because people think "they have the same type of setting" means "they are the same".

I would personally find it difficult to recommend SAO to any fan of .hack//sign. God forbid, can you imagine following such a recommendation expecting something in the same vein?

People are too hung up on the RPG aspect regarding recommendations. I think I'm going to take a look at Lain's recommendations because they seem much more appropriate for what I want.

I see where you're coming from and agree, but it's just easy for people to do. It's the same reason the two shows were compared so incredibly heavily while SAO was airing/before it aired (during the hype about it). People think "It has to do with characters in an MMO so they are super similar!" but they really aren't. The only remotely similar thing between them is the MMO aspect, but ignore the setting and the shows have nothing comparable. Even the 'stuck in the game' thing is vastly different in both and it's barely even relevant in //sign aside as an excuse for all the rest of the story to happen and people to meet.

It's just one of those stupid things you have to get used to, but you're probably making the right decision to look elsewhere for more things in the same style of .hack.

HAHAHA LOL
Precisely. I watched it long ago but didn't understand shit. This was back in the Animax days. I also loved the PS2 games too, though I only played Quarantine the most simply because I was high-levelled, and I didn't have Outbreak. And maybe Infection too? So I was basically just jumbled up between Mutation and Quarantine lawl.

But now, I'm REwatching it and for the first time, watching it while understanding and I can see that DAMN, FUCK, I'm getting the GITS 1995 feel or even Lain feel about questioning your existence. Goddamnit.

But if there's anything wrong with this, it would be the fact that it's made by Bee Train. There are a lot of things wrong with EVERYTHING about the animation: the lighting, the colouring, the contrasting of light and shadow, it's all a monstrosity. I don't mind this lacking action, and in fact, that's why I wanted to rewatch this because I remembered it had a much deeper story and had more interesting philosophies than a certain other thing whose name should not even be mentioned. And the story does not fail to keep me interested. If anything, I feel like playing all 4 .hack//SIGN games from the start.

Shet
