I am already catching up to the manga. One piece is more about fights than story and character. Some themes are covered but not even close to Berserk. hard disagree on this take. while I do prefer Berserk more, One Piece's characters are incredibly well developed. Like other people have said, the two series cover very different themes, but the characters are a major focus of the story, not to mention the depth of the plot itself. idk how far into it you are, but it's more Adventure than battle shonen. the battle shonen aspects are definitely turned up after the time skip, but there's a perfectly good narrative reason as to why. |

Many say it is one of the best story told ever. I got hyped and this happened. What makes it so great? The first two episodes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes are, by a wide margin, the worst two. I'd recommend watching the following watch order: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (prequel movie) Overture to a New War (much better retelling of the events of the OVA's first two episodes) Episodes 3-110 of the OVA. As for the animation, it improves over time, and the story is so, so worth it. |

Are you asking for things similar or better? Angel’s Egg is a short movie that is a masterpiece and similar in its art and existential feel. Oyasumi Punpun is generally better but I’d say very different. |

If your looking for some really good dark fantasy and don’t care for heavy reading then I strongly recommend the song of ice and fire books (the game of thrones books). But if your looking for something more character focused shows/manga then I would recommend Vinland saga |

I think it really comes down to personal preference and what you are looking for in a story, but in terms of writing... I consider Manga series like "Oyasumi PunPun", "The Climber", "Monster", and "Vagabond" to be a little bit better written personally. But, like I said... It comes down to what you are looking for in a story. Although... In terms of stories I liked more than "Berserk" personally? I think "Vinland Saga" is up there... Also I'd throw in "20th Century Boys", "The Climber", "Oyasumi PunPun", and "Pluto". These are my personal favorite Manga Stories that I'd put over "Berserk" but, you might think differently though... |

One Piece. The story is great, the characters are well developed and given the recognition they need. The world-building is undoubtedly the best in any manga. The artwork is also one of the best I've seen. |

I see more themes in one piece than berserk. Mainly Fate Freedom and dreams. Dreams and fate were very well done in one piece story as a whole while freedom was done very well in certain characters. As for writing you can deny the writing masterclass in arcs like water 7 Arlong park saboady etc |

Within it's own genre of Dark Fantasy, Berserk is pretty much S-tier... A Song of Ice & Fire (the "Game of Thrones" book series) is another dark fantasy S-tier, arguably even better. The works of Mark Lawrence or Joe Abercrombie might also scratch that grimdark itch of yours. BUT if you consider ALL genres and every other medium, there are plenty of other works that reach the same HIGHS of artistry as Berserk, with less flaws too - just that they can't be DIRECTLY compared, on account of being too different. Among TV shows - The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Chernobyl, Mad Men, Bojack Horseman, etc all come to mind. Western comics - The Sandman by Neil Gaiman; Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, & Miracleman; Hellboy by Mike Mignola, just to name a few. Novels (excluding dark fantasy)- Frank Herbert's Dune series, Tolkien's Middle-Earth saga, Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, Stephen King's Dark Tower, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, Robin Hobb's Farseer series, Orson Scott Card's Ender quartet, etc are all G.O.A.Ts of their respective genres. You'll actually find a FAR higher number of better-written works outside of the sci-fi & fantasy genres tbh. The Brothers Karamazov, Crime & Punishment, One Hundred Years of Solitude, War and Peace, Ulysses, The Stranger, Metamorphosis, No Longer Human, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Great Gatsby, Wuthering Heights, Midnight's Children, The Handmaid's Tale, etc are all literary masterpieces. With movies it's harder, cos unlike a TV show, book, manga, comic etc they have very limited time to give depth to their characters & breadth to their worlds & stories - but stuff like Apocalypse Now, The Schindler's List, The Godfather 1&2, Schindler's List, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Incendies, Requiem for a Dream, The Lives of Others, Se7en, Zodiac, Memento, 12 Years A Slave, Hereditary, Whiplash, Alien etc still make quite the impact. Last year's "The Northman" had some Berserk vibes. |

If it is a story, Berserk is not among the top 20! A manga that has been published since the late 90s and has only one decent and excellent story arc! If we talk about art and thematic atmosphere, Berserk is one of the best. Berserk can be considered somewhat involved in the creation of the Soulsborne genre/subgenre if it comes to influencing other manga or other media such as video games. |

Well, I haven't read berserk, so I can't really say for sure, but I think the story of: Made in abyss, BoJack horseman ,Vinland saga, Black sails and Monster are probably the best I have seen in terms of pure story/writing. breaking bad is also up there, but it's lack of real "themes" may put it below for people who care about that. everything that I mentioned here is a 10/10 in my book though. but actually, there is one more. ignore themes, characters, and all these other mombo jambo, if we are talking pure plot structure, pure "core story", I don't think anything can beat 13 sentinals. the fact that, that story functions on any level, is beyond me. 13 different main characters, dozens of high concept ideas that most stories would barely deal with 1 at a time, with the story going back and forth from middle, to end, to start, without telling you which is exactly which. with enough twists to melt your brain, and somehow everything works together. it shouldn't. it sounds impossible. but it does. |

And most of this stuff can be applied to bunch of other anime titles as well. You didn't need to dig it up from the net, I asked for your own interpretation of it, since manga explores many themes like religion, lust, power, sexuality, ambition, revenge, freedom, etc... The only reason I asked you this it's cuz you claimed Berserk at some point deviated from its main theme. |

The strongest candidates from my favorites are- Lone Wolf and Cub, Blade of the Immortal, Houseki no Kuni, Historie, Eden: its an endless world, Monogatari series, Legend of the Galactic Heroes For real life non-manga literature only the Russian Novels are on the same level (I believe English literature including Shakespeare is overrated as Hunter x Hunter) |

With a reread of berserk, I think my previous comments on berserk might have been too biased. Black sword, golden age and conviction arc were really that good. However my point of berserk losing its points in story-&-characters and focusing more on the artistic side from kushan invasion arc is true Its a preety good story, definitely not the best story. Hell its not even the best manga out there And yes I still stand by the take of asoiaf being a massively better series than berserk in terms of story, characters and worldbuildings |
