personally I think the first half doesn't need a whole lot of changing but if they fleshed out the 2nd half and made it so you could extend the story for a season 2 I would be much happier.

Spoilers Below*

Now in terms of the Anime, we will not get a season two, this is not because there is no source material, but because we all saw Hiro and Zero Two reincarnate as two new individuals who are now forever destined to meet and be with each other.

Zero Two and Hiro went through a journey with friends in an odd world, and when they became exposed to it, they grew friendships and relationships. Now, when Zero Two and Hiro died, they gave a chance for humanity to restart, which was in the form of the kids and Hiro’s friends who later became adults, and started future generations, in which humanity was re-built. Now if Hiro and Zero two came back, they would come into a world without their friends.

Not only that, but there would have to be some plot, such as a calamity. If that were to happen, it would scratch the hardship they went through.

So all in all, there will be no Season 2 unless you want to forsake all the hardship and logicality of the situation. I can say that in the many years to come, there is a high chance for a remake, or a spin off that has an alternate reality.
