There was a woman who gave a talk before the showing of the Evangelion movie. It involved spoilers and a quote from the creator who said roughly "there hasn't been any progress in anime since the evangelion series aired". Meaning there hadn't been an anime that had sold as much merchandise, and she was like "when I thought about it, I have to think he was right".

It wasn't as though as I wasn't having enough trouble trying to view the film in the best light possible. Quelling my preconceptions about mecha anime was hard enough without her making me want to hate it before it even began.

I don't think it has affected me too badly, but it still grates even now.

Weirdly enough, I will say this for the original. The old, dated anime style suits it a lot better.

Oh well, if you don't like mecha the first half was always going to be completely underwhelming.

Ok, here's a question:

Which would you recommend people first? Ouran or Utena?

Ouran is a much easier 'gateway anime', and it has fewer aspects that might detract from the series, whereas Utena requires more effort/a higher tolerance level for things like repeated animation, old school shoujo character designs, etc. So I'd recommend Ouran first, even though watching Utena before Ouran would allow one to better appreciate some of the stylistic choices in the latter.

I found Ouran initially very offputting because of the borderline homosexuality between a lot of the guys in the first one or two episodes, which would have made me stop watching if it had carried on quite like that, and because I wasn't sure what a 'host club' was and I suspected they were prostitutes :P. So for someone completely new to anime the first couple of episodes probably confirm all their suspicions of what's bad about it. I'm very glad I stuck with it though, obviously.

I'm not a big fan of either, but Ouran is probably more easily acceptable. Utena is a lot more weird and repetitive.

Utena has loads of borderline rampant homosexuality too :P

Wait . . . These are bad points?

No I know what you mean, it's hard to get into if you're not used to it. It's just that ouran seems like a pretty nice gateway into Utena and unfortunately, as Janice said you lose the appreciation of ouran stylistic choices.

Maybe there's a better lead into utena?

I thought the question was what should you recommend to people first. To answer that question, I think Ouran tends to be a better recommendation because it's more main stream and Utena's more of an oddity that's harder to appreciate.

What you're now talking about is assuming you're gonna watch all of them, what leads into what. For THIS question, the natural order is actually:

Rose of Versailles -> Utena -> Ouran.

Rose of Versailles is a totally different kettle of fish to Utena, however, the inspiration for Utena herself is Oscar, the central character of Rose of Versailles. Being the daughter of a general who wanted a son, she's a woman who was brought up as a man and taught in the ways of the military. It's an awesome historical drama/shoujo series, though the very dated production style may put a lot of people off before they get to appreciate the substance underneath. It's on my A list though :D

@Janice
I loved FLCL. Thanks for the recommendation! ^_^
I adored the chilled-out feeling of this show. This was mainly thanks to its brilliant soundtrack. I found the show very uplifting ^_^. I saw the symbolism of how the main character was growing up, starting to become an adolescent. I think the show really managed to show how the world looks to pre-adolescent eyes. The way he doesn't quite understand everything, and the way he just absorbs the amazing things he sees, just watches, rather than being concerned with reacting for other people to see him reacting. And the way that it seemed to had a happy ending - although I can't be sure of that because it was getting a bit abstract :P. The show was heartwarming somehow ^_^.
It was a bit like Utena in that there seemed to be a lot of symbolism going on, and even if you don't understand the symbolism it still really resonates with you.
So that's definitely +1 RS for Janice! ^_^.

It's because I don't read manga at all back then.

But recently, I read the Hikaru no Go manga online after watching the anime, so I'm thinking of rewatching Berserk and maybe read the manga online for that too, specially since the Berserk manga is ranked #1 in MAL.

I've looked around on teh webosphere to see if my usual shopping sites will sell me the CDs but they don't seem to have them. Loving the music. I'm gonna have to listen to it all again once I get a translation of the lyrics because I bet the lyrics are pretty cool too!

Yay, glad you're enjoying the songs! Sadly, Japanese CDs (and DVDs) are always hideously expensive, apparently because they're of much higher quality. I managed to buy some singles by The Pillows once, when they were on sale... nothing since.

Here's a lyrics site I often use - some translations have minor mistakes, but it's generally reliable. The Pillows often have surprisingly angsty lyrics: http://www.pirouzu.net/lyrics/lyrics.html

speaking of music, I just remembered the "Woke From Dreaming" song from Gunslinger Girl. The dreary feeling is so appropriate for the anime. A pity they only used it in one scene in the entire series (that I can recall)... and only for like 20 seconds.

+1

Janice recommended me junjou romantica.

It's not that graphic. I mean take for example the scene where the main Seme jumps on the Uke and jacks him off. You just see the Uke clutching the bed. It's suprising erotic but not graphic :P

maybe we should show it as a random :P (I'm being serious, BL is a part of anime. Having one as a random wouldn't be too bad for one week. Maybe not this one but . . .)
