This was an amazing series, not because of the fights (which were all somewhat mediocre) but because of the personality of the characters. Each character was done great. Definitely an underrated series, I can't decide between 8 and 9 for the series, so I'm gonna give it a 9 for now but I might change it later.

And let me just spread the love for Yoshimori's dad. Easily one of the best dads, ever. He may be powerless, but he doesn't whine about it. He has faith in his kids (and his wife) and is probably the only person in the family who makes an income. And he took his wife's last name. He's just one awesome underrated character.
100% agree. Him and Garp (from One Piece) are my top anime parents for now...

Overall very enjoyable series but was slow at times. I too that the earlier episodes felt like filler and had too much cake episodes but I guess that makes it unique.

On the topic of Yoshi's Dad, I think he looks way too young. Heck, Masamori looks older than him!

Hmm, final episode felt somewhat dense imo.

*bitch slap*
OUCH ! That must of stinged. Glad everything is settled for now though. First half of the series bored me somewhat but second half got much better. In particular, avenging Gen's death at the hands of Kaguro was one of my highlights.

METSU!
7/10.

It was interesting at times, slow at others. The character development was nice, but I can't see giving it more than a 6 (6.5 if we had a decimal system but I round down since we do not) myself, as there were imo very noticeable dips in quality through out the arc's. That being said, there are a lot of comments about this show being under-rated....it's rated with a 7.84 which shockingly enough means it's actually rated higher than Naruto which is about as mainstream as it gets. I personally think hoovering right around an 8 is quite an accomplishment for any anime that is not mainstream.

That line shige-jii said to masamori seemed like it hit him hard. "Youre too focused on destroying things. A kekkaishi is someone who both destroys AND connects." That line was probably my favourite moment in this whole anime. If shige-jii had used his nenshi to connect with bunny's nenshi that would have made the ending all the more awesome.

I dunno if I'll pick up the manga. I liked this show a lot, but I'd rather follow Masamori and the Yagyou around then follow yoshimori for 300+ chapters. If Masamori was the main character Im sure I would have enjoyed this show much more.

Amazing series! I really liked how they kept premise simple yet interesting with Kekkaishi vs Ayakashi and their kekkai technique. Some shows really go over the top with these things. It made me want to keep watching after every episode and I was never bored... it's like they ended it just as things were getting interesting - time to move on to the manga.

The episodes after Shishio Gen made his appearance have been pretty bad, and it became worse after his death. His character itself was pretty good, but his character dynamics with Yoshimori and Tokine were so cheesy and cringeworthy, and his influence on Yoshimori is a net negative for me. After his death, Yoshimori became really unbearable, and if it wasn't for his inherent blood/talent and the plot armor, there's no way he would have survived the ordeal he went through. There's plot/character induced stupidity too, certain characters were dumbed down in order to forcefully move the plot into certain direction, which isn't much to my liking.

I really liked the first half, Yoshimori developed really well over that span of time, but his development was sort of reversed in the last half, making him more rash, more stupid, more annoying, basically making him a character that doesn't think at all, as oppose to where his development in the first half was leading to.

I also dislike the fact that they give Yoshimori so much talent to a point where Tokine is totally useless now. Let's be honest, she's just in this whole thing because she's part of the main character. I personally feel that the action hasn't been that great ever since Ketsu could be shattered super easily by the enemy, I am not a fan of that power development.

RIP Kaguro I guess, can't beat plot armor, even when protagonist was much weaker than you at this point of the story. I also dislike the involvement of Sen, actually, I dislike his entire character, which was there for the purpose of reminding us how heroic or great Shishio was, the flashback plot device.

I like Masamori tho, glad he's part of the main character for the manga, would love to have more Masamori than Yoshimori.

edit: btw Sunrise has done a great job animating this series, Kekkaishi looks really good consistently throughout 52 episodes. Next time, I want my long running shounen animated by Sunrise. xD

Kinda disappointing that this adaptation had to end just when it got really good. Imo it could've been 100 episodes long or even more.
In any case, now I'm eager to pick up the manga.

Unlike most people I think the last 10 episodes or so is when the show took a turn for the worse. I much rather preferred the first 20 episodes of semi-episodic adventures that toned down all the cringey battle shounen tropes.

Here's a list of what went wrong:

-Abandoning natural power progression and interesting use of pre-established rules and relying on Yoshimori's chosen one natural talent and boneheaded willpower to dictate the outcomes of fights.
-Yoshimori becomes a comically one-dimensional shounen protagonist that makes nonsensical decisions that only work out because of plot armor and the aforementioned chosen one status. He gets himself captured in order to get to Kaguro, but has no plan for getting out of his restraints in order to get to Kaguro once he's in the other world. He charges Kaguro even though he has no chance of winning, and lessens his chances of winning by excluding Tokine.
-Villains being stupid.
-Villains talk too much during battle.
-Villains comically relish the fight and play around with their prey because they want to face a stronger opponent. This isn't Tom and Jerry.
-Villain backstories are crammed towards the end, and sandwiched between battles. This drags out the battles and breaks immersion because two people supposedly fighting to the death are trading sob stories. More importantly, concentrating a villain's entire backstory into one flashback instead of gradually revealing more about their character through small moments scattered throughout the story makes these stories feel like cheap attempts at humanizing them. The stories themselves are cheap, but given that this is a kid's show it wouldn't be totally fair to criticize the old "I'm a monster and I don't understand humans" trope.
-Sen was useless.

When Beatnik said in his review that the show becomes a "tad" too derivative I was hoping it didn't come to this.

Amazing anime. The story was a great ride along the way Yposhi and Tokine grew along with various characters. I will be really eager if they continue this even further. The world, the setting, the charcters are all just awesome. The comedic moments were throughout the anime, which made me crack up at the right moment for the right matter. Overall an 8/10.

The last episodes were like a poem, and all the characters had interesting backgrounds and personalities. One of the best shounen shows I have watched.

Considering they were catching up to the manga, I suppose they picked a good ending point. Not everything else is resolved but the current is well wrapped up.

For a relatively unknown anime, it's pretty good and better than I expected.

I like all the characters in this anime. They are all very charming in their own way.

The male MC does get annoying as the anime goes along. He screams alot. I have never seen a shounen anime where the male MC screams alot since DBZ. I also like how the male MC of this anime is not voiced by a chick.

All shounen animes have comedy scenes, which is one of the things that I just hate about it because it can ruin the atmosphere. But the thing is, in Kekkaishi, I loved all the comedy scenes. They fit perfectly. They made me smile. It was great.

I didnt like how this anime had TONS of flashback scenes that almost took half the episodes. I dont need to know everyone's backstory in the form of a flashback.

Also, this anime had tons of episodic episodes. Sure, those episodes had the purpose of introducing the stories of characters, but we didnt need their stories to be the whole episode.

Since this is a 52 episodes anime, I would have liked to see Yoshimori's unrequited love be addressed.

But this anime is a great introduction anime to new anime fans, to introduce them to anime, to introduce them to action anime.
